‘Alice’ opens with $116.3 million, a 3-D record

NEW YORK — Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s trip down the rabbit hole drew huge crowds, as “Alice in Wonderland” earned a whopping $116.3 million in its opening weekend — a record for a 3-D film.
The surprisingly huge total easily surpassed all other films in release and gave Walt Disney Studios an even bigger opening than that of the hugely popular 3-D film “Avatar.” It also marked the biggest opening weekend for a non-sequel.
“This is just one of those cultural phenomenons that has caught everybody’s interest,” said Chuck Viane, Disney’s president of distribution. “They don’t come like this very often.”
The film beat forecasts that ranged between $65 million-$75 million, and the surprising results added some intrigue to Oscar Sunday. Before the weekend, Disney and 20th Century Fox competed over the available 3-D ready screens; screens outfitted for 3-D are rapidly rising, but still amount to fewer than 4,000 in the U.S. and Canada.
Before “Alice,” many of those screens were still dedicated to Fox’s box-office behemoth, “Avatar,” which is up for nine Academy Awards on Sunday, including best picture.

Grant Association’s Web site, http://digital.library.msstate.edu/collections/usgrant/index.html.
John F. Marszalek, the association’s executive director and managing editor, said the organization wants the archive available to the broadest audience of researchers, historians and others interested in the prominent 19th century figure who led the country for two terms spanning 1869-77.

Two Mississippi State freshmen looking to have some weekend fun could find themselves in prison for an ill-conceived beer run, police say.
Christopher Madson, 19, of 1136 Arborhill Drive, Woodstock, Ga., and Tyler Spears, 18, of 1526 Brook Ridge Drive, Woodstock, Ga., were both charged with burglary of a commercial building following an early Sunday morning incident in which the two are accused of smashing a window of a downtown-area convenience store and stealing seven 12-packs of beer.
Starkville Police Department officers were sent to the Sprint Mart convenience store at 301 Highway 182 East shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday after receiving a call that the burglar alarm had been tripped.
Officers arrived to find one of the store’s plate-glass windows shattered and a large hoe in the center of the window. They then began searching the immediate area around the convenience store in hopes of spotting the suspects, said SPD Sgt. Chadd Garnett on Monday.
Within minutes, the two suspects were spotted by officers about two blocks away from the convenience store walking east on Highway 182 toward the Mississippi State campus, Garnett said.

By JANA RILEY
BB Staff Writer

Voices will be raised in song tonight at Mississippi State University as the Kenyon College Chamber Singers, conducted by Dr. Benjamin Locke, take the stage in the oldest auditorium on campus.
The concert will be in the Bettersworth Auditorium at Lee Hall at 8 p.m. today This group is Kenyon’s premier touring ensemble, comprised of 53 undergraduate students, placed by a competitive audition.
“The group is noted for its versatility of vocal style and broad repertoire. The New York Concert Review applauded the artistry of the ensemble, stating ‘the young members of the Chamber Singers... retain the proper lightness to navigate the translucent textures of Sweelinck’s Cantate Domino and Palestrina’s Sicut Cervus... focused intently on the conductor, the singers kept their audience hanging on every word.’”

MSU’s Department of Communication and Theatre MSU are partnering with Starkville Community Theatre to produce a cabaret-style show to benefit a scholarship fund established in memory of long-time faculty member.
“Sorta Love Songs,” written by up-and-coming composers Scott Burkell (lyrics) and Paul Loesel (music), will be staged in the main theater at McComas Hall March 19 and 20 to benefit the scholarship created in memory of Lora J. Defore. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. both days.
Defore, a 19-year faculty member in the Communication Department, lost her four-year battle with cancer in November 2009.
She served as coordinator of the public relations concentration and internship program coordinator in the department, and she was a three-time recipient of the Lambda Pi Eta Faculty Member of the Year Award.
To honor her memory, department leaders created the Lora J. Defore Scholarship Fund.
The staging of “Sorta Love Songs” will be the first production by a community theatre or university, which is exciting, said Pattye Archer, a long-time friend of Defore’s who, along with Alison Stamps and Marianne Ulmer, is directing the show.
Carole Sorenson is serving as musical director and accompanist for the production, which features a cast of 14 SCT veterans, newcomers and MSU students.
