MSU’s Department of Communication and Theatre MSU are partnering with Starkville Community Theatre to produce a cabaret-style show to benefit a scholarship fund established in memory of long-time faculty member. “Sorta Love Songs,” written by up-and-coming composers Scott Burkell (lyrics) and Paul Loesel (music), will be staged in the main theater at McComas Hall March 19 and 20 to benefit the scholarship created in memory of Lora J. Defore. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. both days.

Fire marshals remind public of burning rules |

Frequent thunderstorms in recent weeks have kept conditions across Mississippi from becoming too dry, but as the weather continues to grow warmer, that could change, creating the possibility for grass and brush fires. Thus far, the Starkville Fire Department has only responded to one grass fire this year, though Oktibbeha County volunteer fire departments have seen a few outside the city limits. “With spring right around the corner, we usually see an increase in requests for residential burn permits, primarily for yard cleanup from the winter months,” said Fire Marshal Stein McMullen with the That’s why Fire Department officials want to remind local residents about burning regulations within the Starkville city limits and encourage safety precautions should dry conditions develop.
