With so many ideas for decorating and a chance to get started on a little Christmas shopping, the Festival of Trees is a great way to get into the holiday spirit.
And the event will be open for public viewing from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday at the Palmeiro Center on the Mississippi State University campus.
Festival organizer Regina Byrne said visitors are going to have a lot of fun at “Dicken’s Village,” which will be filled with a variety of holiday gifts.
Donations will be accepted throughout the day to benefit the United Way of North Central Mississippi.
In the first night of the event, the second annual Festival of Trees raised over $22,500 at the Holiday Party and Auction, said Jennifer Glaze, vice president for tourism development for the Greater Starkville Development Partnership and festival organizer.
Glaze said organizers expect that figure to increase throughout the event.

Breakfast with Santa

Tickets are still available for the Breakfast with Santa event at Festival of Trees, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday.
Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa, make a craft they can take home with them and enjoy breakfast provided by local restaurants.
Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras and take Christmas photos with Santa or in front of the Christmas trees.
Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door.
To purchase tickets or for more information, visit the Web site at http://www.festivaloftreesstarkville.com or call Byrne at 617-3318.

Holiday Home Tour tickets now on sale
Thursday, 19 November 2009
For the Daily News

Tickets are for sale now for the Dec. 6 Holiday Home Tour and Tea sponsored by the Starkville Civic League.
Held in conjunction this year with the Greater Starkville Development Partnership’s tree lighting ceremony and Christmas Parade on Dec. 5, the Holiday Home Tour and Tea will feature four homes for viewing in the Browning Creek subdivision off Oktoc Road, including those of Joe and Carolyn Bryan, Richard and Jennifer Blackbourn, Davis and Hailey Woodward, and Beth Prisock.
“We are delighted to open our home as a way of supporting the efforts of such a fine organization as the Civic League, which contributes enormously to our community in many ways.  We encourage the Starkville area community to come out and enjoy a festive afternoon at Browning Creek to begin the holiday season,” said Jennifer Blackbourn, homeowner of one of the four featured homes on tour.

Festivities on Dec. 6 begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Oktoc Community Center with refreshments, and the homes will be available for viewing from 2 to 4 p.m.
Refreshments will be served until 5 p.m.
Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased at the Campus Book Mart (downtown location), Montgomery Jewelers, Greater Starkville Development Partnership Welcome Center, and from any civic league member.
All proceeds from the project will be used for community service projects and donations by the Starkville Civic League.
Past projects include: purchased urns and landscaped with plants at the University Drive entrance of Odd Fellows Cemetery, contributed to the purchase of the Old Main District clock on Main Street, made financial contributions to Firemen’s Park, Habitat for Humanity, Crisis Pregnancy Center, Safe Haven Abuse Center, and Oktibbeha County Humane Society, and most recently purchased Christmas banners adorning Main Street.
