Today is the big day — the Webster County Development Council is asking shoppers to spend “$20 on the 20th” with Eupora retailers.
And on Saturday, the “Earlier Than The Bird” event will feature special discounts for shoppers throughout the town.
Webster County Development Council is using the $20 on the 20th event as a way of encouraging residents to shop at home. The Friday and Saturday shopping events will provide a “jump start” for holiday shopping.
Cynthia Wilson, executive director for the Webster County Development Council said the Earlier Than The Bird event will feature Eupora retailers  who will open their businesses at 7 a.m. Saturday and offer special discounts only available during the early morning hours. Special prices will begin at 7 a.m. and continue through 11 a.m. Saturday in Eupora. Items will go back to their regular price until after Thanksgiving.
“Since we would like to see as much of our money stay in our community as possible, there is an added bonus,” Wilson said.
The Webster Progress Times will give a year’s subscription to the person who, by show of receipts, can prove they spent the most money in Eupora on November 20-21.  Those wanting to be in the running for the subscription, must keep receipts and show them to the Webster Progress Times staff by November 25.
The Webster County Development Council will also be hosting a Christmas Market event on December 5, with special Christmas shopping opportunities from local artisans. The Market will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., followed by the Eupora Christmas Parade.
For more information about this special two-day shopping event, contact Wilson at the Webster County Development Council at (662) 258-7835.

The Greater Starkville Development Partnership’s education committee is seeking nominations for the newest honorees in the Education Hall of Fame.
“The Education Hall of Fame recognizes members of our community who have had outstanding commitment to education during their careers,” committee member Lynne Richardson said. “While serving as an educator has its own intrinsic rewards, the Hall of Fame is a way to recognize and celebrate the impact an educator has had on students for a lifetime.”
The purpose of the Education Hall of Fame is to recognize Starkville area residents who have achieved state, regional and national recognition in the field of education. It also allows the community to honor and show appreciation for local citizens who have put Starkville on the map due to their distinguished work in the field of education.
“Education is our top priority. Its impact is not only important for the success of our individual children, but quality educators impact our well-being as a thriving community,” GSDP CEO Jon Maynard said. “Teachers who go the extra mile to impact their students and to further the field of education in our community are worthy of recognition.”
A selection committee will carefully examine the nominations submitted and will select no more than three people for induction.
The person selected should be residents of the Starkville area at the time of their most outstanding educational accomplishments and at the time of their selection. The person(s) selected are expected to be good citizens of the Starkville area and their educational accomplishments should reflect favorably on Starkville being an education hub for our state.
“The Education Hall of Fame is one avenue for showing our appreciation to these educators who work tirelessly to secure a better future for our young people, and consequently, for all of us,” Maynard said.
Nomination forms must be received at the Partnership office by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Forms are available at the Partnership office.
