Parents plan to sue SSD

A group of concerned parents and community members are seeking legal action against the Starkville School District Board in its recent approval of a dress code policy.
The policy has come under fire from parents because it mandates specific types of clothing for students in the wake of recent public debate over uniforms.
“I feel like our concerns were dismissed by school board on multiple occasions, and I’m just ready for them to hear our side,” parent Sarah Coleman said. “Even if a judge doesn’t rule in our favor, my feelings are, at least we’ll know that someone listened to our concerns and took them into consideration.”
State law mandates that there is a 10-day period in which to file an appeal of the board’s decision.
The complaint will be filed in the Oktibbeha Circuit Court this Friday, according to information e-mailed from parents to the Daily News on Wednesday. After that date, no additional parties can be accepted.
Attorneys will be at the Sportsplex tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. in the conference room to talk to the community and obtain names and signatures for affidavits of anyone interested in joining the appeal, the e-mail message stated.
The attorneys will be able to answer any questions about the case, and the appeal documents will be at the meeting for review. Parents must sign for minors under 16.

Howard Duncan of Starkville was recently promoted to the rank of master sergeant while deployed to Mosul, Iraq.
Duncan’s father retired as an master sergeant, and both served with the Starkville- based 2nd-114th Strike Battalion.
So for Duncan, this was a big accomplishment.
The National Guard runs deeply in the Duncan family. And a third generation of Duncan’s has made the National Guard a career. Howard’s son is a member of a National Guard unit on the Coast.
Duncan has been in the National Guard for almost 35 years, and has worked full time as a technician for the Guard for over 22 years.
“So he serves dual status and has served with  pride and integrity, said Kim Duncan, Howard’s wife.  “He has always given it his best and has served diligently.”
Duncan has been on two tours to Iraq and a six month tour to Bosnia.
“...We are very honored and happy that he’s invested a lifetime serving his country and at the same time being a wonderful husband and father,” Kim Duncan said.
