Over the weekend, the Starkville chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority donated two chalkboards and chalk to Patriots Park.

Chapter President Ann Carr said every year, the national sorority office has Impact Days, and the donation to Patriots Park was a part of this year’s Playground Mobilization Days in which the sorority participates in projects to enhance their community’s parks.

“This is our way to give back to our community, which is what our sorority is all about,” Carr said.

The Playground Mobilization Days committee members were Jeneka Collins, Kellye Woodard, Shawanda Brooks, Linda Wilson and Sharrone Travis.

Carr said the committee, which was made up of several teachers, came up with the idea to donate chalkboards because it would allow for children to play outside but also use their brains.

Carr said the chalkboards and chalk were funded by the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Starkville Parks and Recreation interim Director Gerry Logan said the department is excited that Alpha Kappa Alpha stepped up to help improve Patriots Park.

“Art and expression are important aspects of the recreation experience, so it is a good fit for our parks system,” Logan said. “We greatly appreciate Alpha Kappa Alpha and their willingness to lead this.”

Carr said Alpha Kappa Alpha has participated in Playground Mobilization days, and at the time she was unsure what next year's project would be.
