Christmas came early for 40 students at Sudduth Elementary thanks to Academy Sports + Outdoors.

The company, which opened a new store in Starkville this year, donated 40 bikes and 40 helmets to students at Sudduth. Counselors at Sudduth recommended students to receive bikes.
Academy Store Director Blake Burns said Academy has been donating bikes to schools in communities it serves for the past 16 years.

“We’re super excited to be able to do that,” Burns said. “It promotes the active-minded lifestyle that Academy has. It promotes gifts to the kids that provide that outside, active lifestyle.”
Burns said company-wide, Academy has donated approximately 5,100 bikes this year.

“We want to be a part of the community,” Burns said. “We want to promote an active lifestyle, and this is one way that we can do that for local kids.”

Burns said Academy planned to continue donating bikes annually in the Starkville Community.

“I think it’s great,” said Sudduth Principal Elizabeth Mosley. “They made a lot of children happy today.
