SMITH COLUMN: Playing two seems to be good for MSU

Let's play two.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs certainly didn't mind the idea of that in Southeastern Conference baseball action last Saturday afternoon.
It was certainly not a good way for MSU to open a league series.
The Bulldogs were handcuffed pretty well by Arkansas pitchers Jalen Beeks and Michael Gunn in a 4-0 loss at Dudy Noble Field.

Starkville shut out by Columbus

There was an outstanding pitching performance at Yellowjacket Stadium/Carlisle Field Tuesday night.
Unfortunately for the home team Starkville, it was not in the form of one of its own hurlers.
Instead, it was Columbus’ Hunter Mullis, who had a six-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
Add in strong batting and in the end, the Falcons left town with a 13-0 victory.

Starkville Christian School sees improvement on softball field

The improvement that the Starkville Christian Lady Cougars have made on the softball field over the last few years is evident in their play.
On Tuesday, the Lady Cougars got their first win of the season in an impressive way as they defeated Grace Christian 16-0 in five innings at the Starkville Sportsplex.

SHS boys win five-team golf meet

The Starkville Yellowjackets were glad to see a bright sunny day and calmer winds at the Mississippi State golf course on Tuesday.
Even though the scores were not as low as SHS boys coach Sam Bryant would like, it was good enough to beat four other teams.

Jackets lose region tennis match against Madison Central

Going into this season coach Rob Fyke knew his tennis team was in for a challenge with its new 6A competitors.
On Tuesday afternoon, Starkville faced the first of those teams as they dropped a 6-1 contest to visiting Madison Central.

Volunteers secure win on golf course

There had been some time passed since Starkville Academy picked up a win on the golf course.
Last week the Volunteers remedied that issue by taking first in the Washington Invitational.

Bulldogs find themselves in a good position in SEC

Mississippi State is in good position after the first three weekends of Southeastern Conference play.
The Bulldogs have won their first three SEC series and are tied for first in the Western Division with a 6-3 league record. Alabama is also at 6-3 after sweeping Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa this past weekend to tie State for the top spot in the West. 

Brooks gives boost to Indians

A former Starkville High School pitcher arrived at Itawamba Community College just in the nick of time.
With a shortage of arms, the Indians welcomed Nick Brooks to the program and he has contributed to the pitching staff.

Tough loss for Bulldogs: South Florida Bulls make final charge to beat MSU

The Mississippi State Bulldogs showed the type of fight and determination during the Women's National Invitational Tournament that made head coach Vic Schaefer proud.
Despite the last charge by the South Florida Bulls that resulted in them winning a 60-58 decision at Humphrey Coliseum in the fourth round of the WNIT, MSU had no reason to hang its heads.

Mississippi State tops Arkansas to win series

Mississippi State head coach John Cohen likes the composure and fight of his baseball team.
It showed up once again over the weekend.
After dropping the first game to Arkansas, the No. 16 Bulldogs rebounded to win the next two games, including a 5-1 victory on Sunday to take the series.
