SMITH COLUMN: Starkville's 12 All-Stars show fight, determination

It remains to be seen how much farther the Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars can advance at the Dizzy Dean North State Tournament.
If there is one thing the first two days at McKee Park have taught us is there's no counting out Starkville.
For anyone who left Saturday's game early between Starkville and Southaven National, they missed quite an impressive comeback.

Mathiston 12's rebound for win at state tourney

The Mathiston 12-year-old All-Stars knew they couldn't suffer a third-straight loss at the Dizzy Dean North State Tournament.
After falling to Magnolia Youth 7-4 and Marshall County 15-10, Mathiston defeated Hernando 7-4 Saturday afternoon to live to play another day at McKee Park.

Starkville 8's generate 48 runs at tournament

WEST POINT – There is no doubting the potent nature of the Starkville 8-year-old All-Star offense.
On a day where Starkville generated 48 runs in two games, it defeated Louisville 24-7 in four innings and Caledonia 24-16 to remain unbeaten at the Dizzy Dean South State Tournament.
Starkville had all 13 batters in its order pick up at least one base hit each in the victory over Louisville.

Starkville 10-year-olds win pair at South State event

EUPORA – The Starkville 10-year-old All-Stars picked up a pair of victories at the Dizzy Dean South State Tournament Saturday afternoon and earned their second bye of the event to move directly to championship round.
Starkville got a 10-3 victory over Greenwood in the first game of the day.

The Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars couldn't have asked for a better start to the Dizzy Dean North State Tournament on Friday.
After taking an early 4-0 lead, Starkville hammered Southaven American for two more innings to take a 15-1 victory.

Starkville's rally comes up short in second game

A sixth-inning rally by the Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars fell just short in their second game of the day as they lost a 6-5 decision to Grenada Youth at the Dizzy Dean North State Tournament.
Starkville jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, but saw Grenada Youth come back with four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to get all of the runs it needed.

Mathiston 12-year-olds defeated by Magnolia Youth

Magnolia Youth from Water Valley was able to take a lead in the first inning and keep it in a 7-4 win over Mathiston in the final game to finish of eight on the first day of the Dizzy Dean 12-year-old North State Tournament.
After scoring 21 runs in an earlier 21-8 victory over Horn Lake, Magnolia Youth proved it had a little bit left in the tank to get its second triumph of the day.

Stricklin challenged Kansas State Athletic Director John Currie to a #Chillin4Charity water dumping stunt on Twitter earlier this week.
Currie accepted the challenge and then threw out his own challenge.

Going on the road for tournament play can be a negative at times.
For the Starkville 12-year-old All-Stars, that is something they don't have to worry about this weekend.
