Fast start: Bulldogs looking to improve on offense

Every week in the Southeastern Conference is a grind, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

This week the No. 22 Mississippi State Bulldogs (7-2, 3-2) face one of the top defenses in the nation against No. 9 LSU (7-2, 3-2). The Bulldogs have lost 12-straight games to the Tigers and 19 of 20.

Yellowjackets ready for Meridian

It was a tale of two halves for the Starkville Yellowjackets in the season opener against Greenwood last Saturday.

When it comes to facing the Meridian Wildcats tonight at the Beehive, SHS boys coach Greg Carter wants a more complete effort.

The Yellowjackets established a 12-point lead in the first half before losing a 61-58 decision in the West Point Classic.

'That's on me': Mullen accepts responsibility for MSU's 38-13 loss to A&M

Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen was still accepting blame on Sunday afternoon.

After Saturday's 38-13 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, there could have been quite a bit of finger-pointing going on.

Mullen continued to insist during his Sunday teleconference that the reason for the problems ultimately rest on his shoulders.

Lady Jackets finish second in state swim meet

CLEVELAND – The Starkville High School girls swim team benefitted from the state championship efforts of the girls 200 freestyle relay team and claimed second place overall in Class II at the State Championship meet on Saturday.

Class II is comprised of all Class 5A and 6A schools so the Lady Jackets defeated all 5A schools, while Tupelo was the only 6A school that finished higher.

It wasn't what Mississippi State head coach Rick Ray wanted, but at least it was a win.

Mississippi State held off William Carey 80-74 Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum in an exhibition game.

As the final time ticked off the clock, tackles were not the only thing the Mississippi State football team missed on.

The No. 17 (Associated Press) Bulldogs failed to improve their record to 8-1 and No. 16 (Associated Press) Texas A&M took a 38-13 victory Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium in a rematch of the 2000 Independence Bowl.

It was almost like watching a video game on Saturday.

If only it had been, the Mississippi State Bulldogs could have maybe found a way to pull the plug on it.

The numbers put up by quarterback Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies were crazy.

Texas A&M had 386 yards of total offense by halftime and ended up with 693 to soundly defeat Mississippi State 38-13 at Davis Wade Stadium.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs were not able to produce on either side of the football on Saturday and ultimately the game went the way of Texas A&M.

Comparing the two sides, it was clear that it was as MSU coach Dan Mullen stated “as bad a performance offensively as we’ve had here in quite a long time.”

SHS teams lose basketball openers

WEST POINT – The Starkville High School basketball teams opened the season on Saturday at the West Point Classic and both dropped close games to Greenwood.

For the Lady Yellowjackets, their loss came in overtime 67-65, while the boys lost a 61-58 decision.

The SHS girls had a strong first half, leading 30-17 at halftime, but couldn't sustain it in the second half.
