Streak comes to an end: Bulldogs stop SEC losing skid against Vanderbilt

Fred Thomas let out a big sigh of relief Saturday afternoon.
The Mississippi State guard had every reason to feel like a weight had been lifted off his and his teammates' shoulders.
The Bulldogs snapped a 16-game regular season losing skid in Southeastern Conference play with a 57-54 win over Vanderbilt at Humphrey Coliseum.

Mississippi State didn't have a player that stood out from the others in the boxscore.
The Bulldogs only had two players score in double figures and that was only 11 and 10. It didn't matter though, as the Bulldogs got a total team effort in a 57-54 win over Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum.

Freshmen Victoria Vivians and Morgan William went into Thursday's women's game against the LSU Tigers as the leading scorers for Mississippi State.
Neither were a factor for the Bulldogs against the Tigers.
Vivians, who averaged 15.3 points per game going in, was held scoreless, while William, who had 10.2 points per outing, only had two points in a 71-69 double overtime loss to LSU.

Starkville Academy girls get good work in a loss

Starkville Academy faced what might have been its toughest opponent to date on Saturday.
It was no easy task and despite a 61-43 defeat to Madison-Ridgeland Academy, the Lady Volunteers were able to really work on some strong offense.

Mississippi State hasn't found Southeastern Conference play kind the last 16 outings. 
The Bulldogs have lost 16 games in a row against conference opponents during the regular season, which is tied for the longest streak in school history and second longest all-time in the SEC.

Jackets push Cougars in second half, but lose

The true character of the Starkville High School boys soccer team was on display Friday evening at Yellowjacket Stadium.
Despite being down three goals at the half, the Jackets never threw in the towel. Instead, they continued to play hard and in the end, the game was decided in the final moments with Northwest Rankin picking up the 6-4 victory in Class 6, Region 3.

SHS girls suffer home shut out

Starkville High School girls soccer coach Anna Albritton had a good feeling about what her team could do going into Friday's match against the Northwest Rankin Lady Cougars.
When the Lady Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead, Albritton's hopes faded away.
The Lady Jackets could never get anything going against the visitors and suffered a 3-0 loss at Yellowjackets Stadium.

COLUMBUS – The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets let a halftime lead slip away the last time out.
The last thing head coach Kristie Williams wanted was for it to happen again.
The Lady Jackets nearly let a double-digit second half lead and halftime advantage fall to the wayside, but they stayed composed in a 67-62 victory over rival Columbus in double overtime Friday night.

Johnson provides effort, toughness to Bulldogs

Coaches are put in a position at times when they have to teach effort first.
That's something that Mississippi State men's basketball coach Rick Ray doesn't have to worry about with Roquez Johnson.
Johnson has been one of the players Ray has been able to count on to give 100 percent on the court.
