Bulldog to participate in Puerto Rico Tip-off

Mississippi State head coach Rick Ray feels like early-season tournaments are the thing to do in college basketball.
He got his wish for next season.
It was announced Thursday that the Bulldogs will play in the Puerto Rico Tip-off next season.

WEST POINT – Starkville High School head coach Kristie Williams got her Lady Jackets to 4-0 Thursday evening.
Starkville knocked off West Point 63-49 on the road. The Lady Jackets led 34-27 at halftime, but trailed by as many as four points in the opening half.
Eryka Williams led the Lady Jackets with 14 points. Acacia McBride added 11 points, while Kelsey Jones had 10 points.

THE DEFENSE: Vols have a strong unit across the board

Across the board, the Starkville Academy Volunteers have a solid defense.
“It goes back to the experience these guys have,” SA defensive coordinator Brad Butler said. “They have gotten better each game. Most of them have been starting since their sophomore year and now they are seniors so they have seen about everything.”

There is really no other way to describe the way Starkville Academy and Oak Forest Academy match up.
Both teams are run heavy on the offense with athletic quarterbacks, while possessing tight knit defenses.
“When you look at Oak Forest, you almost think you are looking in the mirror,” Volunteers coach Jeff Terrill said. “We have very similar offensive and defensive schemes.”

MSU's Mullen knows how tough task can be of being first year head coach

It's not easy becoming a head coach for the first time, especially in the Southeastern Conference.
MSU's Dan Mullen made the move from Florida where he was the offensive coordinator to Starkville to become a head coach for the first time.
Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason was the defensive coordinator at Stanford before making the move to Nashville, Tenn., and the SEC.

The Bulldogs get that chance tonight when the 16th-ranked West Virginia Lady Mountaineers come to town for the third round of the Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament. The tip is set for 7 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum.

Experience has benefitted Starkville Academy defensive back Blake Slaughter.
As he looks back on his last two years with the Volunteers, Slaughter has noticed the progress.
"I've played a whole lot better this year compared to last year," Slaughter said. "Last year was my first year to actually start, so this year I came in with a little bit more experience."
