Sword gives solid effort for Bulldogs

Craig Sword set the example on Saturday afternoon for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
In a game where MSU coach Rick Ray wanted each player to do one thing a little bit better to help the team get a Southeastern Conference victory, Sword did just that.

State women venture to Tennessee looking for first win in series

It doesn't matter to the Mississippi State women's basketball team that it has never beaten the Tennessee Lady Volunteers before.
This is a new day.
The Bulldogs take a No. 18 ranking and records of 22-2 overall and 7-2 to Knoxville, Tenn., today for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Lady Vols. The game can be seen on the SEC Network.

Bryant enjoys work with next generation of Lady Jackets

Sam Bryant spends his days working with the next generation of girls basketball players at Starkville High School.
This season that work shown brightly as the junior high Lady Yellowjackets completed the season with a 12-3 record and as Golden Triangle Athletic Conference Tournament Champions, which placed them ahead of other conference teams Columbus, Tupelo, West Point and Noxubee County.

Some have wondered why Mississippi State head football coach Dan Mullen wanted to bring back Manny Diaz as defensive coordinator.
There are two pretty good reasons stepping on the field in Arizona today for the Super Bowl.
K.J. Wright of the Seattle Seahawks and Chris White of the New England Patriots both played for the Bulldogs when Diaz was the defensive coordinator in 2010.

MSU's Ray is done with moral victories

Moral victories aren't enough anymore.
Controlling most of the game is just not cutting it anymore, neither is dominating most of the stat sheet.
That's Mississippi State head coach Rick Ray's feeling after Wednesday night's 79-73 loss to Ole Miss. The Bulldogs led by double digits in both halves and shot a better percentage from the field than the Rebels.

Starkville Christian School girls beats Tupelo Christian Prep for the first time

The Starkville Christian Lady Cougars achieved a first on Friday night.
Starkville Christian had never beaten Tupelo Christian Prep on the basketball court before, but on the home court, the Lady Cougars got the job done with a 57-41 victory over the Lady Eagles.
"I think this was their best basketball IQ game of the season," SCS girls coach Mark Horstemeyer said.

SHS teams pick up sweep, Lady Jackets 5-0 in region

BRANDON – The Starkville Yellowjackets picked up a victory sweep over Class 6A, Region 3 foe Northwest Rankin on Friday.
The Lady Jackets were first with a 64-56 win. Highlighting the win were offensive leaders Tabreea Gandy whose night ended with 20 points, Eryka Williams with 17 points and Tanita Thompson, who added on 11 points.

Starkville Academy splits pair at Washington School

GREENVILLE – The Starkville Academy Volunteers hit the road Friday evening for a matchup against Washington School.
In the girls game, it was a closely contested ballgame, but in the end, the Lady Generals got the 38-30 victory.

Choctaw County picks up home wins

ACKERMAN – The Choctaw County Chargers hosted Raleigh Friday night and came away with two Class 3A, Region 2 victories.
Brysa Maxwell's 15 points helped the Lady Chargers beat the Lady Lions 56-35.
A 14-3 run by Choctaw County (9-9) in the second quarter helped put the Lady Chargers up 32-19 at halftime.
Maxwell had eight of her 15 points in the fourth quarter for the Chargers.
