SMITH ON SPORTS: Reaching NCAA Tournament a big deal for MSU softball

It's very difficult to reach the NCAA Tournament in any sport.
Making it to postseason should never be taken for granted and it should never get old.
The Mississippi State softball program has reached the NCAA Tournament in four-consecutive seasons under the leadership of head coach Vann Stuedeman and it has certainly been an impressive run.

A few years later, success usually follows.
As the Lady Wolverines prepare for a state softball championship series, their fellow classmates on the baseball diamond are two wins away from joining them.
The Wolverines come into tonight’s baseball matchup with Hatley in a familiar situation.

Vols show progress during season

The Starkville Academy Volunteers showed tremendous progress during the 2015 baseball season.
In his second season with the program, coach Jody Britt saw a 14-game improvement from the Vols in one year.
Starkville Academy went from winning nine games in 2014 to getting 23 this year. The Vols finished with a 23-11 record.

Faulk joins SDN staff

Robbie Faulk has joined the Starkville Daily News sports staff as the high school beat writer.
Faulk is a December 2013 graduate of Mississippi State University with a degree in Communication and has since gained experience as a writer of college and high school sports.

MSU's Rea picked as finalist for the C Spire Ferriss Trophy

Wes Rea's senior season at Mississippi State has been a step up from his junior campaign.
The first baseman was recognized for it on Monday.
Rea was one of five finalists for the C Spire Ferriss Trophy, presented annually to the most outstanding college baseball player in Mississippi.

Bulldogs make NCAA Tourney for fourth-consecutive season

Mississippi State softball coach Vann Stuedeman made it four-for-four on Sunday night.
During the NCAA Softball Selection Show on ESPNU, the Bulldogs learned that they were going to be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season under Stuedeman's leadership.

MSU softball offense shows power under Ricketts

The Mississippi State Bulldogs broke the school home run record this season.
With 52 home runs as a team, MSU has produced the power numbers.
One person that has been a big part of the Bulldogs' improvement on offense this season has been hitting coach Samantha Ricketts.

Mississippi State coach takes blame for losses

Mississippi State's inability to close out a game nearly cost it a win on May 2.
It did on Saturday in Oxford though.
The Bulldogs were able to overcome a ninth inning rally by LSU two Saturdays ago and win in the 12th inning. MSU wasn't able to overcome a five-run ninth inning rally by Ole Miss this past Saturday.

MABEN – Bailie Springfield didn't like the fact that she gave up a home run to the Eupora Lady Eagles in the first inning on Saturday.
The East Webster offense showed that it was more than able to make up for that and had its pitcher's back.

The road to Ridgeland is one well-traveled for the East Webster softball team.
