School board OKs new meeting dates

The Starkville School District Board of Trustees unanimously passed a policy amendment which will move its normal monthly meeting to the second Tuesday of every month beginning in January.

Last April, new head men's basketball coach Rick Ray began to put his stamp on the Mississippi State program.

He set the standard for what it would now mean to play for the Bulldogs.

Hard work, determination and attention to detail would all be a factor in being a part of a new era in MSU basketball.

The success of the Southeastern Conference is worth bragging about at every opportunity.

As far as the first weekend of football goes, it doesn't get much better than what the SEC was able to accomplish out of the gate. The league doesn't appear to be ready to relinquish its standing as the toughest in the country.

Lady Jackets use defensive strategy for 3-0 home volleyball win

The Starkville High School volleyball team did something for the first time this season Tuesday night.

Vivian Barksdale played the defensive speciality position, libero, and the Lady Yellowjackets took a 3-0 win over Amory in the Beehive.

Young SHS softball squad has a difficult time against New Hope

The Starkville High School Lady Yellowjackets may have taken a tough loss at home Tuesday night against the New Hope Lady Trojans, but they also saw signs of what they could become in the future.

Even though Starkville eventually dropped a 17-0 decision to New Hope at the SHS softball field, head coach Lisa Spencer saw some things that she liked from her team, especially offensively.

Aldermen to hold 1st budget hearing

The Starkville Board of Aldermen will hold its first public hearing on the proposed budget for the 2013 fiscal year at its 5:30 p.m. meeting today at City Hall.

Mayor Parker Wiseman said it is important that the public view the budget and take the opportunity to offer input during the hearing. The budget is available online at http://www.cityofstarkville.org/detail.php?p=2&s=218.

‘Rose Tattoo’ begins week-long tribute festival

The spirit and legacy of playwright Tennessee Williams continues to thrive throughout the Golden Triangle.
The 11th annual Tennessee Williams Tribute Festival and Tour of Victorian Homes begins Tuesday with a performance of Williams’ “The Rose Tattoo” at 7:30 p.m. in the Rent Auditorium at the Mississippi University for Women.

Starkville School District Superintendent Lewis Holloway says the school board is likely to move its normal monthly meetings in 2013 to the second Tuesday of each month.

The SSD Board of Trustees will discuss the move 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Greensboro Center.

Back to work: No Labor Day off for MSU with Auburn next on slate

Monday may have been Labor Day and most people took the holiday off.
When it comes to having to play the Auburn Tigers next, the Mississippi State Bulldogs had no choice but to go to work.

MSU head football coach Dan Mullen saw the holiday as an opportunity to get some things accomplished while the players didn't have to attend classes.

Mrs. Q.B. Hunt, 89, of Starkville died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 at the Carrington Nursing Facility.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 in the chapel of Welch Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in Sturgis Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012 at Welch Funeral Home.
Welch Funeral Home in Starkville is in charge of arrangements.
