There is a saying in sports that the effort of a player doesn't show up in the boxscore.
That statement may hold true in soccer more than any other athletic endeavor.
On Thursday at the Starkville Sportsplex, Starkville Academy soccer coach Robert Gardner wished the effort of Austin Miles could have been rewarded with a goal.
The process continues for the Mississippi State women's basketball team as it enters Southeastern Conference play tonight.
MSU coach Vic Schaefer would like to be further along and more prepared as the Bulldogs look to challenge the Vanderbilt Commodores on the road, but consistency remained an issue as the non-conference part of the schedule came to a close.

It didn't get much better on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (8-5) fell 34-20 to No. 21 (Associated Press) Northwestern (10-3) in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl at EverBank Field.
Mullen's record against ranked teams dropped to 2-17 all-time at Mississippi State.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Gator Bowl may not have gone in Mississippi State’s favor, but there was one bright spot in the form of the running game.
In a day where the passing game was not working, the Bulldogs looked towards Josh Robinson and LaDarius Perkins to establish an offensive surge on the ground.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Mississippi State offense didn't give the defense much of a chance Tuesday afternoon.
They answered the call for the most part, but it wasn't enough as No. 21 (Associated Press) Northwestern (10-3) beat the Bulldogs 34-20 in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl at EverBank Field.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Taking with them a 29-22 record, the 2012 Mississippi State senior class finished as the winningest senior class in over a decade.
“We didn’t finish this thing out like we wanted to, but those seniors had a good run here at Mississippi State," Bulldogs running back LaDarius Perkins said. "Those were some great seniors that we had.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mississippi State is looking to find some success on the offensive side of the ball.
To do that, the Bulldogs have to start with the offensive line.
What a year!
For Mississippi State senior Johnthan Banks, 2012 was one of the best years to date, but it was a season that almost did not happen.
As last year wound down, the defensive back weighed his options and at the last moment decided to return for his senior season.
It is a choice the senior does not regret.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There was some uncertainty about coach Tim Brewster when he arrived on the Mississippi State University campus.
As the Bulldogs come to the end of the 2012-13 football season, Brewster's name sticks out.
Being a college punter is something Baker Swedenburg has been working toward since he was a lowly freshman at Heritage Academy.
The Mississippi State junior got some help from one of the all times great in high school. Swedenburg attended Ray Guy camps when he was younger.
