Sam Lenahan knows what hard work means as a member of the Mississippi State softball team.

In her transition from catcher to third base, it's nothing new for Lenahan to face the task at hand with the Lady Bulldogs.

Starkville Academy shuts out St. Andrews

RIDGELAND – The Starkville Academy Volunteers got the season started off successfully Friday night with a 13-0 shutout against St. Andrews.

Starkville Academy didn't waste any time by scoring on its first possession of the game as quarterback Drew Pellum ran for a 6-yard touchdown. Jonathan Burton added to extra point kick for the Vols.

Tigers do swarming by beating Jackets to open the season

Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell knew his team was going to have to score points to defeat the Noxubee County Tigers Friday night.

Eight was not enough.

The Yellowjackets were dominated on both sides of the football in their home stadium and lost a 29-8 decision to open the season.

Timberwolves turn up scoring in 66-6 victory

MABEN – Adam Lowrey took last week's 7-6 loss to East Webster in a jamboree pretty seriously.

So Monday he decided to change some things up.

It was evident it West Oktibbeha's 66-6 victory over S.V. Marshall Friday night at the West Oktibbeha High School football field.

East Webster beats Vardaman on road

VARDAMAN – The East Webster Wolverines scored four touchdowns on the ground and added a field goal to beat Vardaman 30-14 Friday night.

Deangelo Liggins scored from 28-yards out in the first quarter to make it 7-0. Tyler Crosby converted the point after touchdown.

Marques Reives scored from 8 yards out to make it 14-0 in the first quarter. Crosby, again, was good on the extra point.

Mississippi State wins season opener

The Mississippi State Bulldogs defeated Southeastern Louisiana 2-1 at the MSU Soccer Stadium in its season opener Friday night.

With State starting the season off 0-3 and finishing at 6-10-3 last year, the team wanted to get off to a fast start with a victory this year.

It only took the Bulldogs’ first game to score two goals and obtain a victory which took four games last year.

Bulletin: East Oktibbeha game time moved

East Oktibbeha's season-opening football game at Leake Central, originally scheduled for Friday night at 7:30 p.m. has been moved to Saturday at 3 p.m. in Carthage.
The reason for the change was lighting issues at Leake Central.

Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell has been in search of a center and long snapper during the preseason.

Going into tonight's game, Mitchell believes he has found two players in Jalen Henderson and Chris Rogers who can handle the task.

Volunteers seek to make a good impression early

The Starkville Academy Volunteers look to build on the momentum of a successful 2011 football season.

The Volunteers made an appearance in the Class AAA, Division II State championship game, but lost to Washington School.

East Webster understands the test Vardaman presents

The East Webster Wolverines may be playing a Class A squad, but it will be no pushover.

The Wolverines open the season on the road at Vardaman tonight at 7:30 p.m.

"We know we have a very tough opponent," East Webster head coach Doug Wilson said. "Vardaman is one of the No. 1 teams in 1A. They have a great coaching staff, a good team and going to be a very tough game for us."
