High school football is built on rivalries and nowhere in Mississippi is there a better rivalry than Starkville-West Point.
On Friday night, the rivalry was renewed and for two and a half quarters the fans of both schools were treated to a game for the ages. However a single play led to the Yellowjacket demise, dropping a 47-22 decision to the Green Wave.
MABEN â€“The East Webster Wolverines could not overcome several miscues as they dropped their first game of the season to the Caledonia Confederates 27-10 Friday night.
The Wolverines are now 3-1 this season as the Confederates remained undefeated and improved to 4-0.
EUPORA â€“ In a game that looked like it was going to be an offensive explosion early, the Eupora defense stepped up and dictated the rest of the contest.
The Eupora Eagles (4-0) beat the West Oktibbeha Timberwolves (2-1) 41-10 Thursday night at Wafford Field.
The Starkville Yellowjackets need to bring another big container to the football field this week.
After bottling up the Tupelo Golden Wave 28-0, the Jackets have visions of doing the same thing defensively tonight against a rival of a different color as the West Point Green Wave invade Starkville. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Starkville Academy football team is not where it excepted to be three games into the season.
Tonight the Volunteers (1-2) take on the Leake Academy Rebels (2-1) at home. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The East Oktibbeha football team plays its first division game tonight and it has yet to see a game on its home field this season.
The Titans (1-2) square off against the Sebastopol Bobcats (1-1) on the road at 7:30 p.m.
"I know they've got good athletes," East Oktibbeha head coach Randy Brooks said.
The Starkville High School volleyball team reached its 10th win of the season Thursday night and has been the case in several recent matches, it came in straight sets.
Starkville swept New Hope 25-14, 25-13 and 25-22 at the Beehive.
Even though the Lady Yellowjackets did not drop a set, there were things during the match that coach Lauren Love noticed her team was a little off.
The Eupora and West Oktibbeha football teams have much in common, but have approached its matchup against the other in different ways.
The Eagles and Timberwolves square off in Eupora at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
Eupora reached its 3-0 record by coming off a 22-13 win over Winona last week.
The West Point Green Wave are looking to get a little bit better each week.
After getting beaten on a last-second field goal by South Panola 12-10 in the first week, West Point had an open date before defeating Columbus last Friday 26-19.
The Green Wave make the trip to face rival Starkville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The winner of the football matchup between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers on Saturday will gain an early advantage in the Southeastern Conference Western Division race.
It creates a certain measure of pressure on quarterbacks making their seventh and second starts of their careers.
