The Starkville High School volleyball team looked like it was in a good position to advance.
The Lady Yellowjackets took the first set, but Center Hill regained momentum to take the next three sets and won a 3-1 decision in the Division II playoffs Saturday in the Beehive.
SHS opened the match with a 25-19 win. The Lady Mustangs took the second set 25-5 and shifted the momentum their way.
The answers for the Starkville Academy Volunteers were all positive during homecoming on Friday night.
After SA took a 20-0 lead in its game against rival Winston Academy, the visiting Patriots hit a big play with a 76-yard touchdown run by Orien Daily to cut into that margin a bit.
CANTON â€“ The Starkville High School Yellowjackets remained unbeaten in Class 5A, Region 2, District 6 play with a 42-0 shutout of the Canton Tigers on Friday night.
SHS tailback Preston Baker rushed for 133 yards and a score as the Jackets stand at the top of the region standings.
EUPORA â€“ The Ackerman Indians were about to deliver the knockout punch.
Derrick Jones intercepted a pass and took it back 90 yards late in the second quarter to start a rally and Eupora scored 15 unanswered points to win 22-18 Friday night in a Class 2A, Region 2, District 4 game at Wafford Field.
MABEN â€“ The West Oktibbeha Timberwolves continued their journey to a possible region title by knocking off West Lowndes 44-8.
â€śOur guys got off to slow start (Friday night),â€ť West Oktibbeha coach Adam Lowrey said. â€śThey overcame adversity in the second half. As the game progressed, the tempo picked up, we found our rhythm and ultimately we took care of business.â€ť
MABEN â€“ Deangelo Liggins rushed for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the East Webster Wolverines defeated Williams Sullivan 47-6 on homecoming.
Liggins had an 8-yard run in the first quarter for a score, then added a 25-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Offensively, East Webster generated 414 yards.
The past three postseasons have not been kind to the Starkville High School volleyball team.
This year the Lady Yellowjackets look to erase the past and start fresh. They face Center Hill today at noon in the Beehive for the first round of the Class II playoffs.
Last year SHS lost to Hernando at home.
Starkville Academy head coach Jeff Terrill believes that his team is still in the thick of things.
"We probably had the best two days of practice that we have had all year," Terrill said. "The kids have really responded well. We know we are still in the thick of everything. We look at this as a big game to hopefully get back on the winning side and play well."
The Starkville Yellowjackets have plenty of options in the running game.
With running backs Jaquez Horsley and Preston Baker, wide receiver Darius Grayer and quarterback Gabe Myles, the Jackets believe they have athletes capable of picking up yards on the ground in bunches.
There's usual quite a bit at stake when the Ackerman Indians and the Eupora Eagles meet on the football field.
Tonight will be no exception with the two rivals.
The Indians (6-2, 2-0) travel to Wafford Field to take on the Eagles (7-1, 2-0) in a Class 2A, Region 2, District 4 game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
