Monday saw the heat index soar well above the 100-degree mark, but that didn’t stop the Starkville Yellowjackets from opening their training camp for the 2012 football season.

SHS head Coach Jamie Mitchell seemed pleased with first day of work for the Class 5A North Half champions, but quickly admitted the heat did have an impact on his team.

Starkville Academy soccer coach Robert Gardner has eight of 11 starters returning which helps in the chemistry of what's happening on the field and he likes the way preseason workouts have been going.

Lady Volunteers suffer tough softball loss in their first game

Starkville Academy was hoping for a good start to the season to give its young players a confidence boost.

The Lady Volunteers schedule didn't help and SA fell to the Oak Hill Lady Raiders 18-0 Monday afternoon at Lady Volunteer Field in the first fastpitch softball game of the season.

SA came back to win the junior varsity game 8-4 in the nightcap.

Mississippi State gets baseball commitment

Coach John Cohen and the Mississippi State Diamond Dogs continue to ride the momentum of their Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship.

State picked up its seventh commitment of the 2013 signing class on Monday in right hander Avery Geyer.

The Pensacola, Fla. hurler recently made a trip to Starkville where he fell in love with Mississippi State and the baseball program.

Area schools have questions to answer early in football practice

Improvement seems to be the them for the East Oktibbeha football team this fall.

The Titans start practice today in Crawford and are hoping for a better season than last year.

The Titans ended last year with a 5-6 record. Although East Oktibbeha did not achieve a winning record, several players from last year's squad will be missed.

Lady Vols open softball season at home

The Starkville Academy fastpitch softball team may have to rely on young talent this year.

The Lady Volunteers open the season at home today against Oak Hill with varsity at 4 p.m. and junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.

SA head coach Kayla Mosley is not too concerned with her young players and is ready to meet the new season head on.
