MATHISTON – The East Webster girls baskeball team beat Houlka Thursday night in impressive fashion.

Wolverine sophomore Quantesha Patterson put on a shooting display in the first half with 29 points, giving East Webster a lead of 38-8 at half.

Bulldog basketball numbers limited by injuries

It has been a season to forget to this point for Mississippi State first-year basketball head coach Rick Ray.

Ray and the Bulldogs have had to battle several injuries this season, including injuries to the top returning players.

Robinson's double-double keys MSU women's win

Shamia Robinson was not slated to get any minutes Thursday night for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

It was a good thing she did.

Robinson logged a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes to lead the MSU women's basketball beat Jacksonville State 69-54 inside Humphrey Coliseum.

SHS pair to play in Bernard Blackwell Classic

The respect that Starkville High School defensive back Jacoby Smith gained from opponents was especially on display in the Class 5A State championship game on Dec. 1.

As the Pascagoula Panthers were trying to move the football against the Yellowjackets, they wanted to keep going to the passing game.

What Pascagoula didn't want to do was challenge Smith.

Taking the next step: Former Jackets leave EMCC for four-year schools

Three of them made Colorado, Florida and Tennessee their destinations.

The other two are staying in Mississippi.

Five former members of the Starkville High School football team that signed with East Mississippi Community College two years ago now take the next step in their careers at four-year schools.

Cox, Chappelle sign with MSU

The Mississippi State football team is going to need some wide receivers and defensive backs in 2013.

On Wednesday, the Bulldogs got one of each, courtesy of the junior college ranks.

Defensive back Justin Cox and wide receiver Jeremy Chappelle both signed with MSU.

Both had committed to the Bulldogs earlier this month, but made it official on Wednesday.

SHS celebrates Class 5A title with rally

December 18, 2012

Starkville High’s football team, cheerleaders and band flocked the streets of Starkville on Tuesday for a parade celebrating its recent Class 5A State championship.

Starting in the parking lot of Starkville Daily News, the parade headed along North Jackson, before turning onto Main Street and continuing along its route where it ended upon the steps of the Greensboro Center.

A Minor in hoops: Starkville Academy guard knows game

Having grown up around the sport, the Volunteer understands the game better than most athletes well beyond his years. That knowledge of the game is just one of the many things that leads Starkville Academy coach Mark Alexander to call Minor a “joy to watch.”
