Local prep players take next step

Most high school football players went to bed Tuesday night knowing for sure where the next stop would be to continue their high school football careers.

There were some who slept on it.

As National Signing Day takes place across the nation, there are several local schools taking part.

Starkville High School has eight football players taking their talents to the next level.

The first-year Mississippi State head coach spent three years at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The rivalry between the Boilermakers and the Indiana Hoosiers is one of the biggest rivalries in college basketball.

Huddleston leads SA girls to win over Heritage

Starkville Academy's Tiffany Huddleston plans to sign a scholarship to play soccer at Mississippi State today.

On the even of one of the biggest moments of her life, Huddleston showed she is pretty good on the basketball court as well.

Huddleston led the Lady Volunteers with 16 points and six steals during a 74-36 victory over the rival Heritage Academy Lady Patriots Tuesday night.

Volunteers take 46-40 home basketball win

The goal for the Starkville Academy boys basketball's team all season has been to finish with a winning record.

They took one step closer Tuesday night.

Starkville Academy hung to a 46-40 victory over the Heritage Academy Patriots inside the Starkville Academy Gymnasium.

The Volunteers moved their record to 15-13 for the season.

Lady Wolverine seniors sent out with victory

MATHISTON – It was senior night under the lights basketball for the East Webster Wolverines Tuesday.
was the star as the Wolverines welcomed area rival Eupora to town for senior night.

The Lady Wolverines and Lady Eagles took the court first and East Webster scored the double digit victory 43-28.

Foster brings toughness to the court for Bulldogs

Mississippi State junior guard Candace Foster had an expected reaction when she learned that women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer was pleased with her effort on the court.

"Praise the Lord," Foster said.

For anyone who knows Foster, those words are not surprising coming from her.

Mississippi State reminds transfer of home

It felt like home.

That's why Logan Foulks decided to transfer to Mississippi State to play softball.

While growing up in Douglasville, Ga., Foulks remembers seeing some of the same things that are in Starkville.

"You come in and see the ponds, pastures and lakes," Foulks said. "I fell in love even before I saw the campus."

Foulks was also welcomed quickly by the coaches and players.

Bulldogs seek complete effort

It wasn't the best week for the Mississippi State men's basketball team on the court.
The Bulldogs held halftime leads in both games they played this week, but let things slip away in the second half.

"(It was a) tough week for us on the basketball court," MSU head coach Rick Ray said during Monday's Southeastern Conference teleconference. "I thought we were competitive in two games."

MSU's Cohen talks baseball with Starkville Rotary Club

Between two of the most important football dates of the year, the Starkville Rotary Club had a reason to talk baseball on Monday.

Mississippi State baseball coach John Cohen used his popular power-point method to turn the attention of the Rotarians from the Super Bowl and National Signing Day, set for Wednesday, to Bulldog baseball at the Starkville Country Club.

MSU women use defense for win

Mississippi State women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer was in a mood to celebrate Sunday afternoon.

Following a 47-44 victory for the Bulldogs over the Arkansas Razorbacks, Schaefer gathered his team around in front of the bench and shared a joyful moment.

There haven't been too many of those this season, but Schaefer wanted to make sure the players knew how he felt of their effort.
