East Webster teams split in tournament action

ACKERMAN – In order to have success, you have to put in the work necessary, and for the Lady Wolverines of East Webster, that means continuing to get court time under their feet.
To make that happen, the team took part in the Choctaw County Tournament where they picked up a pair of victories including a 46-20 win over Caledonia on Friday.

Starkville's Mitchell serves Mississippi as the scout coach

Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell has had Alabama on his mind this week.
Mitchell traveled to Mobile, Ala., to serve as the scout coach for the Mississippi All-Stars for the 27th annual Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game that takes place today.

Choctaw County's Lee to show talent

Taboris Lee was a standout for the Choctaw County Chargers all football season long.
Now the senior will get the opportunity to prove himself on a new level as he participates in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

There has been a good amount of freshman making impacts in Southeastern Conference football this year.
Mississippi State has one of those in Chris Jones.
On Thursday, Jones, the MSU coaching staff and fans learned that he was selected to the SEC Coaches' All-Freshman Team.

Bulldogs play Lions in Tupelo

Mississippi State head coach Rick Ray knows how important it is to listen to fans.
His team will do its best to satisfy fans tonight when it plays in the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo.
The Bulldogs (5-2) take on Southeastern Louisiana (3-5) about 60 miles north of Starkville in one of Mississippi's bigger cities. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Bowling is a sport that runs deep for Seth Prewitt and his family.
It has become a passion for the Starkville High School 8th grader.
"My brother made the team two years ago then my mother became the assistant coach so it just kind of became a part of our family," Prewitt said.

MSU's Russell has surgery, will miss Liberty Bowl

Mississippi State senior quarterback Tyler Russell will miss the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Russell had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder earlier this week, a MSU spokesperson said. The procedure was done by Dr. James Andrews and ends the Meridian native's Bulldog career.

Ready making impact for MSU as freshman

The true freshman point guard's presence has been felt on the court early this season. Although he has played in just three games this season, the fans, the coaching staff and players are talking about him.

Area basketball teams are getting a little extra playing time thanks to the Choctaw County Tournament.
"It means an opportunity to get more games under your feet," Chargers coach Gary Beals said. "We played four games last week so we have been playing steadily, but this gives the opportunity to play folks that you normally don't get to play."
