Godley becomes difference maker for Yellowjackets

Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell is very much aware of the value of kicker Michael Godley.
When Godley sends a kickoff out of the end zone and an opponent has to begin an offensive drive at its own 20-yard line, it gives the Yellowjackets an advantage in field position.
Mitchell sees that often from Godley and knows it makes a difference.

Burton rides the emotions with the Vols

Being a kicker is fickle position.
If they make a game-winning field goal, they are the hero. If they miss one, suddenly, they are the loneliest man on the team.
As the kicker for Starkville Academy, Jonathon Burton knows both of those emotions and that is exactly what he loves about his role.

All of a sudden, Class 6A, Region 2 in Mississippi high school football got much more complicated.
The Starkville Yellowjackets knew going into last Friday's game against Warren Central that all they had to do was defeat the Vikings and the region championship would be in the bag.
With the 12-9 loss, the Jackets now have a must tougher path to the title.

Kicking situation for MSU on a week-to-week basis

When it comes to kicking for Mississippi State, it's on a week-to-week basis.
Bulldog head coach Dan Mullen, also the special teams coach, charts his kickers during the week's practice and then makes a decision on who will kick in the next game based on the stats.

Bulldogs support grieving Prescott after mom's death

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen stepped to the podium Monday afternoon with a heavy heart and a good bit on his mind.
It was learned late Sunday night that quarterback Dak Prescott's mother, Peggy, lost her battle with cancer.
Mullen opened his press conference by talking about the tragic and untimely loss of Dak's mother.

MSU takes victory in exhibition action against Shorter

Mississippi State women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer likes to yell the word "go" to his players during the course of games.
It's important to Schaefer for his team to get down the court as quickly as possible offensively.
With the new 30 second shot clock in play, there's even more of a reason to speed up the process.

Sport more interesting for Jackson

Vacations are usually meant for relaxation, but a couple years ago the trip that David Jackson went on brought some new work into his life.
About two and a half years ago, Jackson was on a trip to Sandestin, Fla., when a chance trip brought him upon a triathlon.

Bulldogs play well in exhibition

If there is going to be a vast improvement with the Mississippi State Bulldogs this basketball season, Sunday was a good start.
MSU rolled over Auburn-Montgomery 86-57 in an exhibition outing.
The Bulldogs struggled in last year's preseason game, as they only beat William Carey 80-74.

Lady Vols open season at tourney

Starkville Academy girls basketball coach Glenn Schmidt is anxious to find out if the moves she has made with her team recently are the correct ones.
The East Rankin Academy Tournament will provide the situation Schmidt needs.
The Lady Volunteers open the season against Bowling Green (La.). The junior high game takes place at 4 p.m. with the varsity game following.

Eagles battle to defeat rival, reach playoffs

A good bit of emotion was seen from the Eupora Eagles last Friday night.
Not only was it a rivalry game, the winner received a playoff berth and kept their season alive.
The Eagles were able to hold off Webster county rival East Webster to earn the No. 2 seed out of Class 2A, Region 4. 
They will play host to South Delta this Friday night in the first round of the playoffs.
