SMITH COLUMN: Area shows up very well in tournament

The future of baseball in this area looks bright.
While observing the final game of the Dizzy Dean 8-year-old South State Tournament on Tuesday, it became obvious that there are some pretty talented players emerging from the younger pool locally.

Starkville 12's run ends with third place at State

COLUMBUS – The ride is over for the 12-year-old Starkville All-Stars.
On Tuesday, the team took the field against Louisville in an effort to play its way back into the Dizzy Dean State championship game, but was unsuccessful as it lost 15-3.

Starkville 10's come up short

WINONA – It was a long day of Dizzy Dean competition on Monday for the Starkville 10-year-old All-Stars. After a rain delay in game one, the team did not see action end until around 10 p.m.
In game one, the team defeated Winona 27-11 and it would seem Starkville was on its way to breaking out of the loser’s bracket and into the championship series, but it just was not meant to be.

Championship bound: Starkville Americans win, one game away from title

Only one win stands between the Starkville Americans 8-year-olds and the Dizzy Dean South State Championship.
Charlie Williamson knows how important that statement is, but being so young he says it might take a little while for it to sink in for his team.

Starkville 12-year olds drop heartbreaker

COLUMBUS – Monday was not the best of days for the Starkville 12-year-old all-star team. With the team only needing one win to put them in the Dizzy Dean championship game, Starkville lost a heartbreaker to Columbus 11-1.

Brett in comfortable position

In 2001, Bracky Brett took a job at a small 1A high school just north of Columbus.
Brett was hired by Hamilton High School to be the assistant principal, athletic director and head football coach.
After spending many years as an assistant coach, including an eight year stint at Starkville High School from 1992-2000, Brett found what he describes as the best job he has ever had.

Starkville Americans stay in driver's seat

Day two of Dizzy Dean competition is complete for the Starkville American team and the 8-year-olds still find themselves in the driver’s seat.
Having won all previous games, Starkville only had one game on day two and it was against a tough Mathiston team. Going into the game coach Charlie Williamson knew it was going to be close, but just how close was yet to be seen.

Starkville Nationals split a pair, eliminated

As Saturday came to a close the Starkville National 8-year-old All-Star team was on a roll.
After dropping the first game of the Dizzy Dean South State Tournament, the team won two straight to setup a Sunday meeting with Eupora. The winning continued as Starkville defeated Eupora 16-8 to keep progressing in the tournament.

Starkville 10-year olds move on

July 7, 2013

WINONA – Starkville took two games on Sunday to continue their stay in Winona for the Dizzy Dean 10-year-old State Tournament.
First up was a ball game with Union County where Starkville came out on top 12-0 to set up a repeat contest with Greenwood.
The bats again showed up in the second game as Starkville defeated Greenwood 17-8.

Seeing success: MSU is headed in right direction

Mississippi State athletics are on the rise, if the past year's success is any indication.
Most of MSU 15 sports teams saw a good bit of success in the 2012-13 sports year. Several teams had their best teams ever.
MSU put 10 of its teams into the postseason.
