MSU's Russell has surgery, will miss Liberty Bowl

Mississippi State senior quarterback Tyler Russell will miss the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Russell had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder earlier this week, a MSU spokesperson said. The procedure was done by Dr. James Andrews and ends the Meridian native's Bulldog career.

The true freshman point guard's presence has been felt on the court early this season. Although he has played in just three games this season, the fans, the coaching staff and players are talking about him.

Choctaw County Tournament keeps teams playing

Area basketball teams are getting a little extra playing time thanks to the Choctaw County Tournament.
"It means an opportunity to get more games under your feet," Chargers coach Gary Beals said. "We played four games last week so we have been playing steadily, but this gives the opportunity to play folks that you normally don't get to play."

Little produces for Starkville's 9th grade boys

Little has been much when it comes to the progress of the Starkville 9th grade boys basketball team so far this season.
After transferring from Starkville Christian School, Jesse Little is leading the SHS 9th grade team in scoring and rebounding.
Little has scored 23 points the last two games for the Yellowjackets and averages 16 points and eight rebounds per outing.

It was a rocky beginning for the Starkville Yellowjackets, but the situation got much smoother as Tuesday's basketball game went along.
In the end, the Jackets defeated the Grenada Chargers 72-56.

After losing back-to-back games to New Hope and Meridian to start the season, it would have been very easy for the Lady Jackets to have gotten down on themselves early.

Lady Volunteers take road victory

GREENVILLE – The Starkville Academy Academy Lady Volunteers are starting to mimic the way they have played the last couple of seasons.
The Lady Volunteers downed Washington School 46-31 Tuesday night on the road to improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in district play.
Sallie Kate Richardson led SA with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Nora Kathryn Carroll added 11 points.
