SHS runners show marked improvement

It was all about the finish this year for Starkville’s cross country teams.
After a long season that saw marked improvement, both teams showed up last Saturday in Clinton and ran what some might consider the race of its lives.

Foster watches Hebron grow, mature

Coach David Foster has watched as his Hebron Christian School Eagles have grown and matured during the football season.
Hebron went from losing to Delta Academy by six points (22-16) on Sept. 27 to winning by the same margin against the same opponent in overtime 26-20 last Friday to open the MAIS 8-Man Playoffs.

MSU sees positive with offense

In losses, many teams try to find positive things to take away.
Mississippi State lost an offensive shootout to No. 15 Texas A&M on Saturday 51-41.
The Aggies have one of the best offenses in the country, but it was the Bulldog offense that led in total yards.
The Bulldogs out-gained the Aggies 556-537 in the losing effort.

MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK: Good defense gives Jackets chance to win

Another strong defensive effort helped the Starkville Yellowjackets finish the 2013 regular season on winning note on Friday night.
SHS held the Clinton Arrows to 117 total yards, had four sacks and forced three turnovers to get a 24-7 victory at home.

Kate Mattox takes state again: SHS girls, boys teams each finish third in Class 6A

CLINTON – The high school cross country season came to conclusion Saturday as the Starkville teams competed at the Class 6A State meet.
In what coach Caroline Woomer called their “best race,” the Lady Yellowjackets finished third overall with 75 points. Tupelo claimed first with 42 points while Ocean Springs had 69 points to finish second.

FAMILIAR FEELING: Lions secure the third state title in five years

SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College fans are used to its teams playing for championships and winning them.
The 6,000 fans on hand at Sullivan-Windham Field, mostly Lion fans, saw another dominant showing from EMCC on Saturday. 
The No. 2 Lions rolled over the No. 4 Jones County Junior College Bobcats 61-24 in route to winning the MACJC State championship.

SMITH COLUMN: Stephens has done great job at EMCC

The East Mississippi Community College football coach has been a good "Buddy" over the last six years.
In the six years that Buddy Stephens has been the coach of the Lions, he has built a dynasty.
East Mississippi won its third MACJC State championship in five years with a 61-24 victory over Jones Junior College on Saturday at Sullivan-Windham Field.

Baker contributes to another state title

SCOOBA – Preston Baker is getting used to winning state football championships.
After Baker and his Starkville High School teammates won the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State title last year, Baker was getting his hands on more hardware Saturday.

SHS splits pair with New Hope at Classic

WEST POINT – The Starkville High School boys tipped off the basketball season on Saturday with a dominant 86-47 victory over New Hope in the West Point Classic.
“When we are playing like we played (Saturday) a lot of positives happen for us,” Yellowjackets coach Greg Carter said. “We got into them, really put a lot of pressure on them and kind of took them out of their offense.”
