SMITH COLUMN: Starkville shows sportsmanship in win

One of the best displays of sportsmanship took place during Friday night's game between the Starkville Yellowjackets and Grenada Chargers.
With 8 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Grenada defensive lineman Tony Tillman sustained an injury and had a difficult time getting off the field.

Eupora moves on in Class 2A

BOONEVILLE – Coach Junior Graham summarized Friday's game against East Union in one phrase, "we live for another week."
After leading 28-7 at the half, Eupora defeated the Urchins 42-7 to move forward in Class 2A playoffs to face Baldwyn.

Former Starkville High School basketball player Jacolby Mobley keeps taking his game to another level.
It's not just because Mobley has gone from high school to junior college and now the Division I stage after signing with the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga on Thursday, but coaches have noticed the maturity level increase in the former Yellowjacket.

Rice receives special honor at high school

CRAWFORD – Jerry Rice is one of the most known athletes around the globe.
The wide receiver's career started in the meek Mississippi town of Crawford and ended on the biggest stage – the National Football League.
On Thursday, he returned to his hometown and his alma mater in what called "going full circle."

'Hometown Hall of Famer': East Oktibbeha athletes listen to Rice advice

CRAWFORD – East Oktibbeha High School coach Randy Brooks knows about Jerry Rice as an athlete and a person.
With Thursday's presentation at the school by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate, which honored Rice as a "Hometown Hall of Famer," it was a chance for Brooks and others to visit and hear from the greatest wide receiver in National Football League history.

Yellowjackets seek to unplug Chargers

The Class 6A postseason begins tonight around the state of Mississippi and the Starkville Yellowjackets expected to be one of the teams still standing.
Since Jamie Mitchell became the head coach prior to the 2010 season, the Jackets have made the playoffs three out of the four seasons.

Eupora playing to keep practicing longer

EUPORA – Coach Junior Graham wants his Eupora High School football team to be practicing when there is a little bit of a ho, ho, ho, and the appearance of Christmas decorations.
“It is fun coaching this time of year because you either win or you go home and we want to be playing as long as we can," Graham said. "We want to be practicing when the Christmas lights are up."

Thomas' return helps Bulldogs to home victory

The return of Fred Thomas was a much-needed boost for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
The sophomore guard missed the Bulldogs' season opener last Friday for participating in an all-star game not sanctioned by the NCAA. He was forced to be sidelined for one game per the NCAA.

SHS' Blair Schaefer joins father at MSU

For as long as she can remember, Blair Schaefer has wanted to play for her dad.
On Wednesday, that desire became official as the Starkville High senior signed with the Mississippi State women's basketball team.
“I think there has always been a part of me that has wanted to play for my dad,” Blair Schaefer said. “I want to play for a great coach and I know my dad gets it done.”

MSU women use hard work to gain talent

Mississippi State women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer said his program was able to recruit a hard-working group because of a hard-working group.
