MADISON – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers improved their record to 8-0 for the season with a 53-35 victory over Madison-Ridgeland Academy at the MRA Tournament Wednesday night.
The game was a rematch of last season's Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Overall State Championship game in Clinton.

The Starkville Yellowjackets have gotten used to quarterback Gabe Myles giving every ounce of effort to the offense the last two seasons.
There was no better example of that than when he scored the game-winning two-point conversion last Friday night to help Starkville defeat the West Point Green Wave 29-28 in overtime to claim the Class 5A North State championship.
No, Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell wasn't guaranteeing a victory in the Class 5A State championship game when he said Friday night "we are going to win it."
Before everyone gets all excited and thinks Mitchell was pulling a "Joe Namath" moment here, it is important to put his comment in the proper context.

It was the first win at Tupelo in school history.
Taylor Wise and Juan Salazar had one goal each for the Yellowjackets.
Mississippi State has not been known as a great soccer destination, but Aaron Gordon thinks the program has potential.
On Tuesday, Bulldog athletic director Scott Stricklin introduced Gordon as the fourth head coach of the women's soccer team.
LOUISVILLE – Blair Schaefer poured in 44 points, mainly by hitting 25-of-26 free throws, to lead the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets to a 67-64 victory over the Louisville Lady Wildcats Tuesday night.
After Starkville jumped out to an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, Louisville out-scored the visitors 24-19 in the second quarter to take a 34-30 advantage at halftime.
MATHISTON – In midweek action at the gymnasium on the former Wood Junior College campus, the East Webster Wolverines and the Houston Hilltoppers split hard wood competition.
The Lady Wolverines pulled off a thrilling 45-36 victory over the Lady Hilltoppers, while the Wolverines dropped their contest 54-28.

JACKSON – Bob Stanley remembered what it was like to represent Starkville High School in the Class 5A State championship game in 1981.
Now as a representative of Wilson Sporting Goods, Stanley had a message to the latest generation of high school football players getting ready to play for state championships this weekend.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are committed to the thought of moving forward.
After arriving home from a three-loss tournament in Hawaii at the Maui Invitational over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Bulldogs went right back to work.
Mississippi State (1-4) hosts Alcorn State (2-4) today in Humphrey Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
