Back to the grind for Bulldogs after open date

Mississippi State enjoyed a bye week during week five of the college football season, leaving a Saturday open for head coach Dan Mullen to take a day away from the grind.

“I played with my son and my daughter, hung out with my wife, (and) had a good time,” said Mullen.

Stepping away from football doesn’t mean he didn’t keep an eye on the action.

Giant Gators defeat young Bulldogs in volleyball

It was one of those "David vs. Goliath" type of matchups Sunday afternoon in Southeastern Conference volleyball action between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Florida Gators.

In one corner were the Gators with their No. 12 ranking, undefeated conference record and seven-match winning streak overall.

MSU releases 2013 baseball schedule

Mississippi State officially released its 2013 baseball schedule on Saturday and there are several dates that catch the eye.

First, it's the final weekend in February where the Bulldogs play Purdue and Samford at home. Purdue was a program that hosted an NCAA regional last season and Samford defeated MSU 5-0 and 3-2 at the Tallahassee (Fla.) Regional last spring.

SMITH COLUMN: Cohen believes Canadian Dogs can contribute

Mississippi State baseball coach John Cohen has been doing a good job of finding talented players from all across the country.

Now, he's even starting to bring them in from outside the United States.
Of the 14 newcomers to the Bulldogs this fall, Cohen is anxious to work with two of them from Canada.

Starkville Academy blanks Copiah 40-0

GALLMAN – Michael Miller scored a pair of early rushing touchdowns and the Starkville Academy Volunteers were off and running in winning their second Class AAA-District 2 game of the season over Copiah Academy 40-0 Friday night.

Yellowjackets knock off Rams in Jackson 23-6

JACKSON – The Starkville Yellowjackets survived a night of three turnovers to escape with a 23-6 Class 5A, Region 2, District 6 victory over the Provine Rams at Hughes Field in the heart of the capital city.

Starkville improved its records to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the region.
Provine took advantage of an early turnover to take the lead in the first quarter.

Big play leads to Ackerman win

ACKERMAN – Entering the fourth quarter the offenses for the Ackerman Indians and East Webster Wolverines were looking for one big play.

Ackerman found it in Quinton Lane.

Quarterback Dakota Brasher found Lane for a 63-yard touchdown pass and the Indians slipped past East Webster 6-0 Friday night at Dale Davidson Field in a Class 2A, Region 2, District 4 matchup.

Timberwolves get homecoming victory

MABEN – Homecoming was not the only celebration West Oktibbeha fans enjoyed on Friday.

On the field, the Timberwolves picked up their third straight double-digit victory with a 46-24 win over Class A, Region 3, District 4 foe Sebastopol.

The scoring for the Timberwolves started right away as Von Smith connected on a 65-yard touchdown pass to Lavante Tate on a fade.

On the road again: Jackets return to capital city for Class 5A, Region 2 play

On the road again.

The Starkville Yellowjackets make their third trip to the Jackson area of the season tonight when they meet the Provine Rams. Kickoff for the final game of September is set for 7:30 p.m.

After traveling to beat Lanier 48-0 last week, the Jackets make back-to-back visits to the capital city.

Vols travel to meet Colonels in football
