The Mississippi State football and volleyball programs have something in common this year.
Before the Bulldogs open with the Jackson State Tigers on the gridiron at Davis Wade Stadium on Sept. 1, the volleyball version steps onto the court at Newell-Grissom Building Friday night against the same school.

Madison Central Bobby Hall didn't hide in the preseason what he wanted to do offensively.
"We've got a quarterback that can throw the ball and we've got receivers that can catch it," Hall said. "We've got a lot of speed, so you'll definitely see us throwing the football."
That strategy almost worked for the Jaguars in the season-opener against defending Class 6A champion Olive Branch.
The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers put an end to a four-game soccer losing streak and earned its first victory of the season by defeating the Washington School Generals Tuesday 6-0 at the Starkville Sportsplex.
The win came on SA head coach Robert Gardner’s birthday and puts their record at 1-4 for the season.
Starkville Academy's Mary Austin Barber's senior year on the diamond has been one filled with a lot of emotion and opportunities for her to lead and teach.
The Lady Volunteers fell 13-2 to Heritage Academy Tuesday afternoon at Lady Volunteer Field.
Barber started in the circle for the Lady Vols and saw a 7th grader play in her usual shortstop spot.
