MSU women have first basketball practice under Schaefer

Mississippi State women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer put his team through a four-hour workout to begin preseason practice Wednesday.

Even though the practice was long, it was just a hint of what the Lady Bulldogs can expect as they train for the season under the new head coach.

MSU sophomore Kendra Grant admitted the practice was tough, but something the players needed.

Jackets getting defensive: SHS unit has not allowed offensive points in last two games

Prior to the opening of Class 5A, Region 2, District 6 play for the Starkville Yellowjackets, it was the desire of defensive coordinator Brooks Oakley to see his unit play more like it did toward the end of last season.

It was the effort of the defense that contributed to Starkville's run all of the way to the Class 5A State Championship game in 2011.

Conservative approach working for SA defense

When it comes to defense Brad Butler has always been conservative.

In his first year as the Starkville Academy defensive coordinator, his approach to defending has not changed.

One year ago against the Kentucky Wildcats, Mississippi State quarterback Tyler Russell was splitting time with Chris Relf.

Russell performed well in relief of Relf by having one of his best games of the season. He had nine completions out of 12 attempts for 172 yards and one touchdown.

Seniors contribute to success for SHS volleyball

For one group of seniors at Starkville High School, they waited a long time to have their night in the lights.

Michaela Mills, Jamiyah Covington and Stacie Young are the only three seniors on the SHS volleyball team, and they played their last regular season match in the Beehive on Tuesday night.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are rested and ready to hit the road coming off a bye week.

The Kentucky Wildcats will be anxiously waiting in Lexington, Ky. on Saturday in search of their first Southeastern Conference win of the season.

Lady Vols on roll entering playoffs

The Starkville Academy girls soccer team believes it is heading into the Class AAA-Division 2 playoffs with some momentum.

After defeating Copiah Academy 11-0 in the final regular season match at the Starkville Sportsplex, the Lady Volunteers do enter the postseason on somewhat of a roll.
