Friend frustrated the Rockets have not run ball better

Coach Chuck Friend doesn't like it when he has a team that's not able to run the football effectively.

Over the years, Friend's offensive philosophy has been to run and acquired the nickname "Ground Chuck" because of it.

Friend said the Neshoba Central Rockets have struggled in that area this season.

There will be no mystery when the Starkville Academy Volunteers make the trip back to Senatobia for a game against Magnolia Heights School Friday night.

The two teams met on Aug. 31 with the Chiefs taking a 25-14 victory.

The redshirt freshman quarterback has proven that he can get the job done in the air or on the ground.

Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen knows it may take more than one or two touchdowns to defeat the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday.

After watching the Aggies put up 63 points in a victory over the Auburn Tigers last week, Mullen said the Bulldogs had be ready to take advantage of every opportunity in the red zone to score.

Several Mississippi State fans are anxious to see how their Bulldogs will fare Saturday morning when the Texas A&M Aggies come to town.

The No. 17 (Associated Press) Bulldogs (7-1, 3-1) don't have much time to think about last week's loss to No. 1 Alabama. The No. 16 (Associated Press) Aggies are knocking on the door.

It will be an unfortunate situation if athletics gets taken away, or even partly taken, from the Oktibbeha County schools.

As of right now, its appears the schools still can compete, but only in Class A, Region 3, District 4 games only. That means there can be no participation in the playoffs, no matter what the record shows.

SCS Cougars open season with a victory

It was an impressive start of the game and the season for the Starkville Christian Cougars at home Tuesday night.

After jumping out to a 21-5 lead after the first quarter, the Cougars saw the Jackson Victors come back to make it close in the fourth quarter, but earned a 72-62 win.

PELAHATCHIE – The Starkville Academy girls basketball team got the 2012 season underway on a positive note.

The Lady Volunteers beat Bowling Green School (La.) 51-46 at the East Rankin Girls Preseason Tournament Tuesday night.

After the first quarter the Lady Vols led 12-8. They entered halftime with a slim lead at 23-21.

Macdonald dismissed as coach of Bulldogs

After failing to qualify for the Southeastern Conference soccer tournament, Mississippi State has dismissed head coach Neil Macdonald.

The Bulldogs finished 9-10-1 overall and 2-10-1 in conference play. They finished last in the SEC Western division.

Macdonald learned of the decision Monday morning. He will be reassigned in the MSU athletic department for the remainder of his contract.
