In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, legislators, media and the public at large are talking about arming teachers with guns. Downtown Martial Arts Academy (DMAA) owner Doug Bedsaul wants to arm them with knowledge.

The Mississippi All-State Honor Choir has accepted all 22 of the SHS Singers who auditioned, clearing these SHS Singers to perform with the choir April 6 at the University of Southern Mississippi's Bennett Auditorium.

Rex Ames believes in the value of the electoral college.
Ames, a senior at Starkville High School, was a finalist in Mississippi's Promote the Vote Oratory Competition in Jackson in November. The question at the center of the debate was whether or not the Electoral College should continue or be abolished, and Ames chose the "pro" side.
March 9th
Starkville High School Senior Rex Ames received Mississippi Promote the Vote's UNO Award, and SHS was named Model Promote the Vote School Program for the state of Mississippi March 1 in Jackson.

As Title I social worker at Sudduth Elementary School, Ginger Mitchell sees a lot of mothers each day.
Mitchell said a great many mothers had joined Sudduth's Parent-Teacher Organization, and a number of mothers taught or had other jobs at Sudduth. It was rarer, she said, to see fathers — or even grown men in general — and she wanted to change that.

Before meeting Wade Williams, Jack Bryan wasn’t bad at math, but he didn’t enjoy it.
Bryan, now a senior at Starkville High School, first met Williams as a student in his trigonometry class. Since then, he said he has taken four math classes under Williams, and his ACT math score has risen from 27 to 34.

Famed violinist Charles Auguste de Bériot once called the violin "the king of instruments" because he believed a violin player's goal is "to imitate the accents of the human voice." Shandy Phillips says there is another reason the violin holds this title: It is one of the most difficult instruments to learn to play.
January 6th
Students and teachers from Starkville and Oktibbeha County schools earned regional, national and international attention throughout 2012, earning awards, winning competitions and pursuing enrichment opportunities.
