Plotting out the 525,600 minutes of the new year

January 6, 2013

I didn’t go to a wild party on New Years Eve or ring in the new year with fireworks and champagne.

Razzle-dazzle 2013 New Year's resolutions

December 30, 2012

This is going to be a razzle-dazzle, bustling, glamorous and exciting year ahead beginning Tuesday. Let's dance in the year with a little razzmatazz, an early style of jazz music. I invite each of you to climb up in the old brown wooden swing dangling in our front yard and swing along with me as we together make our New Year's Resolutions.

Look for ‘God winks’ in 2013

December 30, 2012

My chore this week was to tame the convivial chaos of what was left over from Christmas 2012. As I attempted to shove some decorations under my bed, I found a book I bought nearly 12 years ago after Sept. 11, 2001. It was a delightful little volume which discussed a phenomenon called “God winks.”

For the characters in Starkville Community Theatre’s latest competition show “Dinner with Friends,” there is much more on their respective plates than lamb stew or chicken pomodoro.

Recently, director Kris Lee gathered the show’s cast and crew for a dinner party featuring dishes mentioned in Donald Margulies’s gripping script.

Indulge with holiday favorites

December 19, 2012

By SUSAN FORD

This is the time of year that we all overindulge. In a few short weeks, we will all be back to faithfully logging our calories into our smart phones and amping up our cardio, but for now, we will eat, drink and be merry. I have a few holiday favorites I want to share and a new recipe I went to great lengths to acquire for this column.

Over 12 years ago, Kirk and Maxine Arnett decided to take their love of tennis to the next level.

During a trip to Arizona in 1999, Kirk Arnett said he and his wife began to hatch a nation-spanning sporting idea.

"We talked about it and decided to play tennis in all 50 states," he said. "We started Jan. 1, 2000 in Arizona."
