Day 1 of the SFA Symposium

November 7, 2012

By JAY REED

It was only day one of the Southern Foodways Alliance Symposium, though the fun was well underway with all the hoopla of the night before: food movie, food music, food fashion, food photography, and dinner (also food).

This day would prove to be just as fulfilling. Full and filling. What great words for this day.

Election results flashed on big screen at election party

November 4, 2012

By RUTH MORGAN

The Starkville News election results flashed on a large screen mounted high on the side of Puller’s Drug Store in no way compared to The New York Times Building in Times Square whose famous electric news ticker display was first used to announce the results of the United States presidential election of 1928.

Enjoy golden thryallis in summer, fall gardens

November 4, 2012

By GARY BACHMAN

A couple of years ago, I wrote about a new plant I found for the fall landscape called golden thryallis. We planted some in our landscape at Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, and I have it growing in a large container at my house.

Vaughan’s Vocabulary

November 4, 2012

By DON VAUGHAN

A friend of mine recently told me that her teenage daughter asked her to braid her hair. My friend asked her if she needed it to be upbraided while she braided her hair. She said, “Don, maybe you could weave the word upbraided into a future Vaughan’s Vocabulary column.”

November 4, 2012

By CAROLE DAVIS

Two words put together are very powerful. They are “thank you.” It only takes an instance to say thank you, which suddenly becomes an action as well as a gift to someone else as our expression of our very own thanks. You are the person who gives away the thanks. Now put two other words together, and you have the one word: Thanksgiving.

Nothing sweet about parting

November 4, 2012

By EMILY JONES

They say parting is such sweet sorrow.

Not so, there’s nothing sweet about it. It’s an anxiety ridden, heart palpitation-producing, soul-wrenching experience that has turned my life upside down.

Another year, another Halloween night.

It's time again for the goblins, superheroes, princesses and a myriad of other costumed children to walk the streets of Starkville looking to fill their pumpkin pales with Halloween treats.

Adding spice with tapenade

October 30, 2012

By ALIX HUI

I’ve never been in a church where I’ve known so many people. Seriously, it was over half the congregation. It was like a College of Arts and Sciences faculty meeting but with more amens and less action items. The only real task at hand this first blustery, autumn day of the season was a wedding.
