It is the first column of December and the feeding frenzy has begun. The fantasy was to already be at a weight lower than the actuarial charts suggest, eat my way through the holidays and come out after bowl season at my ideal poundage. Fail.

Iâve been dreaming of booking a spa weekend at one of those plush retreats where the staff pampers the guests and makes them feel wonderful. You know those places â where you can drop a few pounds while dining on gourmet fare and being followed around by an adorable exercise instructor.

If the Mayan calendar is right and the world does end on Dec. 21, 2012, Mississippi State University's improv troupe, Lab Rats Comedy, is ready to give audiences one last laugh riot with "Lab Rats: Defyin' the Mayans" at 9 p.m. Tuesday on the McComas Hall main stage.

Paige Lawes is continuing her mission to make the holiday season special.
Beginning Saturday, Lawes will host her annual âThe 12 Days of Christmasâ luncheon series at Three Generations Tea Room featuring a variety of live entertainment at each session.

Many years ago â shoot, nearly 10 â my brother and I woke on Thanksgiving morning to the clucking of chickens and, strangely, the chortle of a turkey. The beach roaches scattered onto the sand (âbeach roachesâ makes them sound more happy-go-lucky and hapless than when you see one perched on your toothbrush) as we stumbled out of our bamboo hut to the front porch.Â

I was happy to see that many of the social media postings on and around Thanksgiving had to do with getting together with family and friends â social media actually reported social gatherings this time around.Â

What a painting and what a story. It was 35 years ago on October 10, 1977 when I drove down old Highway 25 made a right turn where the Noxubee River crosses back of this side, and I turned west. Here I discovered the most beautiful autumn scene I have every laid eyes on or seen!
