Sturgis preparing in case of disaster

In Buddy King’s experience as Winston County Emergency Management Agency director, usually severe weather damages more homes than it destroys.
But King said that wasn’t the case with the April 28 tornado in the county. He said the tornado traveled about 38 miles in 53 minutes, destroying 460 homes and killing 10 people.

Bulldogs at top of the first CFP poll of season

If the season ended today, the Mississippi State Bulldogs would be one of the four teams in the inaugural College Football Playoff.
The College Football Playoff selection committee released its first poll Tuesday night and the Bulldogs were ranked No. 1. MSU is the top-ranked team in the two other major polls – Associated Press and Amway Coaches. 

Greenwood men accused of local armed robbery

Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department arrested two men early Monday morning in connection with a reported armed robbery at The Pointe Apartments on Misty Lee Lane near Starkville.
Deputies arrested 19-year-old Tyrone L. Weaver and 21-year-old Jacarian Tidwell, both of Greenwood, on suspicion of one count each of armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

As little as two years ago, the property to the east of Buffalo Wild Wings bore a pile of rubble, the remnants of an old movie theater.
But this summer, steel girders sprouted from that property. Excavators removed and repaved the old theater’s parking lot. And now, bricks have begun to encase the skeleton of a new development on the site.

Jury picked in murder trial

The trial of Dennis Thompson, a Starkville man accused of murder and three counts of aggravated assault, will begin at 10 a.m. today in the Oktibbeha County Courthouse Annex on Main Street.
It took most of Monday for for the court to select jurors for the trial for the trial, with the final dismissal for the day a few minutes after 5 p.m.
