False rape claim yields local arrest

Starkville Police arrested a Crawford woman after determining that she falsely accused someone of raping her at a Starkville hotel on Sunday.

A department release said 47-year-old Carolyn Monroe was arrested on suspicion of filing a false police report. According to the report, Monroe told police on Sunday that a male acquaintance had raped her at America’s Best Value Inn on Highway 12.

Benefit set for Harris

Habitat house to be dedicated

Starkville resident Allison Lindsey has a new lease on life thanks to a joint effort between Starkville’s First United Methodist Church (FUMC) and Starkville area Habitat for Humanity.

Lindsey was selected from a group of applicants to receive a Habitat house, and the new home, which began construction in March, will be officially dedicated on Sunday.

Concern on South Montgomery - Police chief dispels rumors of gang-led burglary rash

Starkville Police Department attempted to quell South Montgomery Street residents’ safety fears Wednesday evening during a community meeting at City Hall.

A more than capacity crowd of South Montgomery residents attended the meeting, which was called to address recent rumors that a gang was responsible for a rash of burglaries in the community.

SPD assists in West Point burglary arrest

WEST POINT — West Point Police Department investigators have made an arrest in an alleged home invasion case.

Officers arrested Vernard Gray, 29, and his brother Depriest Gray, both of West Point, Tuesday on suspicion of burglary following an incident on Lone Oak Road.

Cochran survives Senate runoff - Incumbent handily carries Oktibbeha County again

Six-term incumbent Senator Thad Cochran held a firm majority over opponent State Senator Chris McDaniel again in Oktibbeha County for the June 24 Senate Republican runoff election.

Cochran received 3,406 votes (70.37percent) to McDaniel’s 1,432 votes (29.59 percent).

SSD budget includes raises; project funding

Starkville School District Superintendent Lewis Holloway presented the district’s proposed fiscal year 2015 budget to the Board of Education and members of the public at a Tuesday evening public hearing.

The board will vote on the budget at its July 8 regular meeting.
