Fiber program gaining ground - Grassroots effort fuels preregistration bump

A grassroots effort to preregister more Starkville residents for C Spire’s Fiber to the Home program seems to be making some headway in targeted neighborhoods.

Volunteer teams have started going door-to-door recruiting residents to preregister for the C Spire program — which is offering ultra high-speed fiber Internet, along with cable television and landline telephone services.

Cooley heads to Olympics

Mississippi State University Assistant Professor of Communication Skye Cooley has left to Russia to take part, in his own way, in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Cooley won’t be taking to the ice for a figure skating routine or racing down a luge course, but he will have his hands full working in media and research capacities.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS - GSDP unveils strategic plan, awards excelllence at banquet

Greater Starkville Development Partnership CEO Jennifer Gregory presented a new strategic plan with six goals at the Partnership’s annual banquet Monday at the Hunter Henry Center.

Gregory said it was the first time in five years that GSDP had developed a strategic plan. She said the plan was timed to coincide with the completion of strategic plans for Starkville and Oktibbeha County.

USS Stennis capt. speaks to Rotarians

Former U.S. Senator from Mississippi John C. Stennis may be gone, but his legacy lives on through the crew and service of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that carries his name.

That’s what Capt. Michael Wettlaufer, commanding officer of the USS John C. Stennis, told a packed house at the Starkville Rotary Club on Monday afternoon.

Mayor offers State of State response

Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman became the first mayor in Mississippi history to respond to a governor’s State of the State address, according to the Mississippi Democratic Trust.

The trust’s director, Brandon Jones, said he thought Wiseman “knocked it out of the park.”

Equality resolution draws praise, concern

An equality resolution Starkville’s Board of Aldermen unanimously approved on its consent agenda on Tuesday has been called everything from controversial to a victory for gay rights groups.

Starkville Chief Administrative Officer Taylor Adams simply calls it practical.

Sturgis Rally returning - City, Rally board negotiate terms

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Board has confirmed plans to bring its rally back to Sturgis Aug. 15-17 at Dianne Jackson Memorial Park after a three-year hiatus, with plans to sign a finalized contract with the town Feb. 4.
