Mississippi Department of Education officials will hold a live-shooter exercise Saturday at Overstreet School as part of the organization’s school safety training initiative.

The exercise is closed to the public and will occur throughout the day, MDE school safety spokesman Don Criswell said.

The Starkville School District, the Oktibbeha County School District, Starkville Academy and Starkville Christian School have all confirmed that they will remain closed Thursday instead of starting class at 10 a.m. as previously announced due to winter weather, including snowfall.

Mississippi State University announced on Wednesday a new partnership with Severstal North America to create a 4,000-square-foot Steel Research Center (SRC) endowed with many of the same capabilities as Severstal’s Columbus plant on a smaller scale that makes experimental alloy research financially viable.

The legal battle over construction of a new city hall in Starkville may not be over.

Starkville resident William McGovern appealed 14th Chancery District Judge Jim Davidson’s Dec. 18 ruling in favor of the city of Starkville’s municipal facility construction plan to the Mississippi Supreme Court Jan. 9.

Former Alderman Beal enters race for mayor’s office

Former Alderman Mary Lee Beal has announced her qualification to run for mayor in this year’s municipal election Tuesday, making her the third candidate in the race.

Beal will run as a Democrat. Incumbent Parker Wiseman, also a Democrat, announced he will run again Monday. Republican Dan Moreland announced his qualification Jan. 2.
