BREAKING: Poole pleads guilty to aggravated DUI counts

Austin Tyler Poole pleaded guilty today to six counts of aggravated DUI in connection to a May 2012 accident that killed 19-year-old Treasure K. Huffman and injured six others.
Poole, 19, was sentenced to 25 years in prison with five years suspended on the first count and five years in prison on each of the other counts to run concurrent with the first count.

Mississippi State University will host a Women of Color Summit at 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Colvard Student Union’s Foster ballroom with the aim of discussing issues and statistics impacting minority women and ways to increase their chances of academic success.

Former alderman Self qualifies to run in Ward 7 race

Former Ward 7 Alderman Janette Self qualified Wednesday to run for election as a Democrat in that same ward.

Self, who served from 2005-09, was defeated by current Ward 7 Alderman Henry Vaughn when she ran for re-election four years ago. Vaughn has also qualified as a Democrat to run for a second term.

Goodbye Saturday mail? Postal Service plans cuts

WASHINGTON — Saturday mail may soon go the way of the Pony Express and penny postcards. The Postal Service said Wednesday that it plans to cut back to five-day-a-week deliveries for everything except packages to stem its financial losses in a world radically re-ordered by the Internet.

If Starkville Aldermen approved downtown parking fine increases effective immediately, there would have been one problem, Police Chief David Lindley said at the board’s Tuesday meeting.

The people tasked with writing parking tickets wouldn’t be able to write any more of them until they got new ones.
