JACKSON (AP) — Supporters say bills to guarantee religious freedom in Mississippi public schools are meant to ensure students can talk about spiritual beliefs and aren’t deprived of their rights.

But some supporters also say the measures would legalize prayer before school audiences, and that makes people who advocate for separation of church and state uneasy.

A second candidate has emerged to run against incumbent Sandra Sistrunk for the Ward 2 Alderman seat as a Democrat.

Lisa Wynn, currently a literacy coach and a trustee for the Starkville-Oktibbeha County Public Library System Board, is a former Starkville School District employee, where she was a special education and reading teacher.

Starkville Electric Department finished the first phase of its fiber optic network installation in December, which will allow for customers to monitor their use of electricity. In the coming months, many Starkville residents will also be able to monitor their gas usage when the installation of a similar system is complete.

UPDATE: Club shooting suspect identified

Lowndes County deputies have identified a suspect in connection to a fatal shooting at a club near the Oktibbeha-Lowndes county line just after midnight Thursday.

Ronagal Lamar Outlaw II, 17, of 1859 Stowood Road faces one count of murder in connection to the death of 23-year-old Starkville resident Trumaine Macon and is being held at Lowndes County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
