MSU observatory hosts rare comet viewing

About 40 people came to MSU's Howell Observatory Friday night in search of the PANSTARRS comet as it made what scientists believe to be its first ever visit to the inner solar system, a visit not expected to recur for another 100,000 years.

Everything Garden Expo revamped for 2013

The Mississippi Horse Park will host the fifth annual Everything Garden Expo Friday and Saturday at the Mississippi Horse Park.
The expo's hours are from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Admission costs $5 per person but is free for children ages six and under.

Damm named 2013 Irish Rose

The Golden Triangle Celts have selected Dorothy Damm as 2013 Irish Rose, and Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman will crown her in a ceremony and celebration of St. Patrick's Day from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Oby's.

Candidates emerge for garage project

A committee the Starkville Board of Aldermen appointed to review proposals for constructing a parking garage linked to the Cooley Center Development selected recommended candidates for a construction manager and architecture firm to oversee that portion of the project Friday.

JACKSON — In the most obese state in the nation, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant says he’ll sign a new law to prevent cities or counties from banning extra-large soft drinks or requiring restaurants to list calorie counts on menus.

Oktibbeha, state jobless rates up

According to statistics obtained from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, Oktibbeha County’s unemployment rate was one-half percent up this past January from January 2012.

Public records Starkville Daily News obtained this week indicate that starting pay for Oktibbeha County sheriff’s deputies outpaces that of Starkville city police officers by an average range of between 89 cents and $1.68 per hour.
