Mill project preliminary plat approved

Starkville Planning and Zoning Board on Tuesday reviewed and approved a preliminary plat to allow Mississippi State University to move forward with the next step of The Mill project, a large-scale hotel conference center development project located along Russell Street at the Cooley Building. Included in plans for the property’s development are a 110-room hotel and city-owned parking garage.

Trainer’s efforts continue: Supervisor still seeks fiscal analysis for hospital

Talk of potentially leasing the OCH Regional Medical Center has resurfaced.

However, the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors doesn’t seem any closer to proceeding with an analysis of the hospital’s finances than they did when the issue came up in 2012. A financial analysis is required by state law before the county can take any further steps toward leasing or selling the facility.

City seeking people to fill board vacancies

The city of Starkville is looking for a number of people who are willing to serve. Precisely, as of now, that number is 16.

SSD OKs tax hike

The Starkville School District Board of Trustees approved a $9.95 million bond over 10 years for facility maintenance projects and discussed options for scaling that bond back if needed at a later date.

The bond will be funded through a 3-mil property tax increase.

Fire ants pose nuisance throughout Mississippi

As summer returns, so does an infamous pest.

Fire ants are a well-known nuisance throughout Mississippi and the rest of the South. Richard Linley, owner of Northeast Exterminating services, said ants tend to be a seasonal issue.

‘Breadwinner moms’ study resonates

On May 29, the Pew Research Center released a study of U.S. Census Bureau data, titled “Breadwinner Moms,” saying mothers are the sole or primary income source for a record 40 percent of all households with children under the age of 18, up from 11 percent in 1960.

Firefighters train on new ladder truck

Firefighters with the Starkville Fire Department are learning the ins and outs of the city’s new ladder truck technology this week. Chief Rodger Mann said the crew would begin training today on the truck’s operations and pump system. The city obtained the new truck on May 29, a replacement for the 28-year-old Engine No. 2.

Arts Council holds annual members party
