Maben Market closes earlier than expected

This year’s Maben Farmers’ Market has closed ahead of schedule due to low attendance from vendors and shoppers, but vendors and organizers report that the season as a whole was successful.

SHS to present ‘While the Lights Were Out’

Starkville High School theater opens on Friday when students take to the stage for “While the Lights were Out,” their first production of the year.

The play will start at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Starkville High School theater. Tickets are $5.

Multiple citizens expressed strong support for gun owners’ rights and other conservative initiatives during Mississippi Speaker of the House Philip Gunn’s visit to Mississippi State University’s Hunter Henry Center Tuesday for his second iteration of “Mississippi Solutions — an Ideas Tour.”

SSD Board looks into fundraisers

Starkville School District Board of Education talked fundraisers at its Tuesday evening meeting at the Greensboro Center.

The discussion arose while the board discussed approving the last set of fundraiser requests for different groups in the district. During the discussion, board secretary Eric Heiselt wondered if some fundraisers were conducted to cover costs the district should pay.

Noxubee Refuge closure sits poorly with residents

The leaves are changing colors and the birds are still chirping at Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, but nobody is there to see it.

The refuge is going on its ninth day of closure because of the government shutdown. Steve Reagan, director of the refuge, noted the traffic has been noticeably lighter on Bluff Lake Road since the closure.

March of Dimes plans signature chef’s auction

The March of Dimes will hold Starkville’s first Golden Triangle Signature Chef’s Auction at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Mississippi State University’s Hunter Henry Center, raising funds to prevent and manage premature births by bringing together Starkville’s top chefs.

OCSD recognizes student achievement

Oktibbeha County School District celebrated its students’ achievements at its first regular meeting since the Mississippi Department of Education released its 2012-13 school accountability results.

The entire district improved last year and raised its overall ranking from a D to a C.

Supervisors talk education, roads

The Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors discussed manufacturing training with East Mississippi Community College at their Monday meeting.

Raj Shaunak, vice president of Workforce and Community Services at East Mississippi Community College, appeared before the board to discuss the matter.
