Boutique earns merchant of year

Deep South Pout co-owner Jason Stoker called himself and the three other owners “a bunch of knuckleheads that can’t really do anything,” as they stood before a crowd of fellow businesspeople Thursday.

As the group was accepting the award for Starkville Main Street Association’s Merchant of the Year when Stoker made the statement, there apparently has not been a consensus for his observation.

No one injured in Longview fire

The Longview Fire Department contained a single-residence home fire early Thursday morning.

Longview Fire Chief Joe Pennell said the department responded to a 4:09 a.m. call for a fire at 71 Houston Thompson Road. Penell said a single man occupied the home.

Starkville-MSU Symphony Orchestra continues to grow in 45th year

It started out as a small group of people meeting in a living room. Now, the Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra is set to begin its 45th season on Saturday in Columbus.

Fourth Fridays offer fun for writers, readers

The Starkville Community Theatre is hosting its second Fourth Fridays of the season today. Fourth Fridays are held monthly and offer both writers and the audience a chance to offer feedback on writing projects.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack described multiple Mississippi State University research projects as assets to America’s economic recovery after a tour of MSU Wednesday, but he warned that failure to renew the U.S. Farm Bill by Oct. 1 could stymie the promise of such research.

Second Fun Run to raise funds for T.K. Martin Center

Saturday morning, the T.K. Martin Center will be filled with Disney princesses, Scooby Doo and many super heroes cheering on participants in the T.K. Martin Fun Run. But despite the iconic figures, the biggest stars of the day will be the children associated with Project IMPACT.
