Fire department retrofits truck

Sturgis volunteer firefighters have finished retrofitting an Army surplus truck into a brush truck that can travel off-road to put out fires, saving Oktibbeha County thousands of dollars compared with buying new equipment.

City, county FDs report quiet July 4

July 5, 2013


July 4 festivities went off without a hitch Thursday night, and local fire departments were glad to see it.
According to Starkville Fire Department Capt. Andy Sharp, the department responded to only two calls, neither of which were related to fire or fireworks.

Starkville Reads to host Civil War anniversary book event

Starkville Reads will host a special book discussion at 7 p.m. at Starkville Public library on Thursday to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Ted Atkinson, associate professor at Mississippi State University, will lead the discussion on “The Killer Angels,” a historical fiction novel by Michael Shaara.

Indicted lawmaker released on bond
