As a student Starkville Academy, Jake Griffin has strong familiarity with the Mississippi State University campus. Now that the campus is hosting American Legion Boys State, he said, the campus feels different.

“It doesn’t feel like MSU,” Griffin said. “It has its own atmosphere. It does feel like our own little city. It’s nice.”

Local competes at national bee

Ever since March, Bates Bennett’s classmates have been asking him when the Scripps National Spelling Bee is.

On March 2, Bennett won The Commercial Appeal’s Mid-South Regional Spelling Bee in Memphis, earning a spot in the national competition and in Starkville’s 175th Anniversary Parade April 6. Bennett is a sixth grader at Starkville Academy, where he said he was grateful to have fans.
