Family ranch makes difference

Beverly Jones remembers her first horse, a small quarter horse named Blaze her father bought her when she was in the sixth grade.

“We kept him in the backyard, of all things,” Jones said. “He was still alive when I got married. I had many, many adventures with Blaze. (My own) kids grew up riding horses.”

Rasberry retires as Habitat breaks ground on 51st home

Starkville Habitat for Humanity’s 51st home will mark the beginning of new chapter for new homeowner Demetra Petty’s life and the end of a chapter for Executive Director Freddie Rasberry as the organization breaks ground at 2 p.m. today at 270 Arnold Street.

Qualification for city elections ends

The qualifying period for mayor and alderman elections ended Friday, and with two last-week entries for alderman seats, 13 candidates will vie for those seats, while no others joined the three candidates who qualified to run for mayor.

Starkville officials confirmed a former accounts receivable clerk for the city had resigned after an internal investigation involving the city and Starkville Police Department resulted in a felony charge of embezzlement.
