Hotel fire caused by cord short

Starkville Fire Department officials confirmed the cause of a fire Thursday that destroyed the interior of a hotel room at Americas Best Value Inn & Suites on Miss. Highway 12 as electrical.

SFD Training Officer Charles Yarbrough said he concluded in his investigation that the fire was started by a short in a lamp cord.

Agency services vital for seniors

For the Golden Triangle Area Agency on Aging, the work is not about providing a service, it is about fulfilling a need.

As the agency’s director for 39 years, Bobby Gann said the organization provided free social and nutritional services for people ages 60 and older including meal delivery, homemaking, legal and transportation to name a few.

Buses transport Starkville students to Annunciation

More than a quarter of the student body at Annunciation Catholic School in Columbus comes from Starkville.

Sayuri Beltran, ACS marketing director, said transporting these 30 students used to involve three Bulldog Cab Company vans each day and 30 parents volunteering as chaperones each week. Now, she said, it involved just one bus.

Starkville Fire Department marshals are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed the interior of a hotel room Thursday.

A shift manager at America’s Best Value Inn & Suites on Miss. Highway 12 said she called 911 after a customer came into the lobby and said he saw smoke coming from the back of the building.
