Retired Starkville teacher christens new Navy vessel

Typically, the U.S. Navy selects one sponsor to christen each new vessel with a bottle of champagne, but when the time came to christen the USNS Choctaw County, U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus decided one sponsor was not enough.

Starkville native returns as local children’s librarian

Christina Jurusik wants Starkville and Oktibbeha County children to love reading as much as she does.

“It’s my way of having fun (and) experiencing things I couldn’t experience any other way,” Jurusik said. “It’s a way to explore and have adventures. If you’re in a bad situation, it’s a way to get out of it. It really helps if you have a good imagination.”

Symphony to open season with concert

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony will fill the Cadence Bank plaza with the sounds of Dixieland.
